Do you agree with this idea my Buddhist said to me?

He told me they did a study analysis of lottery winners and how their lives turned out after they won. Every single person who won the lottery had a miserable life once they won the lottery, the only one who was happy was the one who gave their money to charity and continued to go to their regular job afterwards. Some of the lottery winners were murdered, had children murdered, got cheated on, assaulted, threatened, kidnapped, developed diseases, drug addictions, side effects from plastic surgery, got victimized by stalking etc…

I think its likely most lottery winners were people who played the lottery a lot - just by statistics. People who play the lottery a lot are likely to have a lot of other issues in their lives - spending a significant amount on lottery tickets is a dumb / desperation move. So this may just be selection bias.

Take someone who has their life in order and give them lottery winnings and they may do just fine. (I'm happy to volunteer...)

I don’t think it’s that black and white. A lot of lotto winners do go bankrupt though.

I mean it's extremely anecdotal, but yes there have been many stories of people's lives getting worse after winning the lottery.

However, if they're saying the only way to be happy is to give it all away, that's stupid and just really irresponsible advice. You don't need to horde it or anything, but you can very easily have a good life of you just treat what you won with respect.
