u In America specifically? According to people much more studied on the matter than I am, one baseline explanation is that anti-Catholicism has been in America since our founding. Many of our founding fathers were Freemasons and Freemasonry has always hated the Catholic Church (though there has been debate as to just how committed some of them were to the ideologies).
Then there's the sex abuse scandals. There have been miserable failures to say the least on this front. And yes, even complicity in covering up the same. Of course, the same left wing that bashes the Church gets all shocked and upset when conservatives criticize public schools for their own coverups of sex abuse and sexual indoctrination and perversion of children.
And of course, there's Church teaching on abortion, homosexuality, and other issues that the US has become more friendly to over the years. Now this, when seen in light of my previous point, is an empty criticism. I've been much more critical in recent years of Pope John Paul II. However, the week that he was canonized a Saint, the New York Times ran an article entitled "A Saint, He Ain't", in which they lambasted him specifically for his negligence on the sex abuse crisis. Fast forward four years though, when Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the Vatican's former ambassador to the US, published a testimony detailing Pope Francis' own coverups of sexual predators in the Church in America, the same stale joke of a "newspaper" published another article criticizing Vigano for revealing Francis' complicity in sex abuse coverups and cited specifically Francis being more tolerant, muted, and accepting on abortion, homosexuality, birth control, sex and marriage... basically all the things John Paul II was very vocal and firm about.
And lastly, there's the fact that we have, what, two or three generations now of people who've been fed all the propaganda in schools and entertainment that all religious people are dumb logic-hating regressives.
Protestants are just as bad.
I think hatred of Catholics in the U. S. has its roots in the Anglicanism and Calvinism that came from England.
I really loved movies like Going My Way, The Bells of St. Mary's, Angels With Dirty Faces, Boy's Town, It's a Wonderful Life, The Trouble With Angels, Come to the Stable, and Lilies of the Field. They symbolized the spirit of common Catholics, not the church hierarchy.
I was raised Catholic, attended Catholic elementary school through 8th grade, was an altar boy, and had nothing but good experiences with the nuns and priests I encountered. They exemplified the same spirit of goodness that the movies I mentioned portrayed.
Later in life, I educated myself and grew out of religion, but I still have a soft spot for the goodness I saw in Catholic people.
It wasn't until years later that stories about pedophilia and certain Catholic boarding schools came to light. That stuff is horrific, especially to good Catholics.
The history of the Holy Roman Empire is full of brutality, slaughter and abuse, too. But religion was just a tool. Powerful people use religion to achieve their own ends.
But again, it's not like Protestantism was an improvement. Look at Cromwell for one example. And look at the Puritans in America. Look at crooked mega-church ministers and their lifestyles. Some Protestants are complete ass holes who believe in a wrathful, vengeful God and embody that same attitude. But many Protestants and Catholics are really good people.
Protestants and Catholics have been at each others throats since day one in Europe. Things were beginning to settle down and wounds healed, shoving your religious beliefs down peoples throats with gun and sword was frowned upon.
But then some idiot discovered America and religious fanatics went, "yah, we can discriminate again and burn witches like in the good old days" You built a country around people who wanted the freedom to hate and discriminate.
Probably the sheer volume of proven cases of child rape by clergy, the act of during the height of the AIDS epidemic in Africa they lied and told villagers that condoms will increase the risk of getting AIDS, hoarding wealth estimated to be in the upper millions to low billions but still ask for other people's money to do shit etc.
There's all sorts of reasons for people to dislike them.

Because of scandals, pedophelia and hypocrisy, but honestly, I think Protestants are way more disliked than Catholics. Catholics at least guilt trip you. I was raised Catholic. You don't have to be an official "member" of the congregation. Unless you're in Sunday school, or private school there, no one will care how often you come, or don't come to church. No one will come knocking on your door to tell you, you're going to hell if you don't convert or think like them, and they don't teach such shit as the do in Protestant schools. The Catholic school in my town doesn't even have a dress code anymore. There are some strict rules and things of course, but no stupid things like talking in tongues, playing with snakes, dancing barefoot, refusing to take your sick child to the doctor because God will heal him. No asking your priest for permission to fuck your wife after you've already had kids. No one will scold you if you believe in evolution and the big bang.
So it's PROTESTANTS that are disliked in the U. S. and give Christians a bad name, because of their idiocy or backwards practices.
I think when it comes to the Catholic Church, the Vatican and the Pope are disliked, because they are losing their way. But Protestants are FAR worse.
Possibly a hangover from religious wars in Europe and don't forget the puritan influx into America. Left wing parties frequently disparage Catholic social policies - abortion is an obvious one.
I suspect the hierarchical structure of the Catholic church is a strong part of it. It stems from the age of monarchies. No bishops, no king as Charles I said.
The English Revolution was about getting rid of absolutist government and securing non Catholic faith with the two being interlocked. In conjunction with the Puritans I'd suggest this influenced the US and it has sort of continued.

I suppose that many people have bad feelings towards the Catholic Church because it has tried to hide sexual abuse by its priests for decades. Don't you think that's a legitimate reason to question the church?

it's the history and the acts of the church that spoil the catholic message.
for example, in Switzerland, you need to pay the church if you want to be a part of its members. And it is not "pay what you can" but an actual subscription fee that isn't that cheap and that seems odd. add to that some of the facilities the church has and you get the notion that they are greedy and corrupt like any other organization that they preach against.
The regressive left doesn't like people of faith, unless they're Muslim, of course.
My wife was raised in the Catholic church. It is like everything else. There are good and bad things about it. The pedophile priests was an absolute disgrace. The way priests were just moved to other parishes and not kicked out was very bad. However the church does a lot of good and I think that religion is one if the things that are missing in our society today

Maybe it has to do with their tolerance of the sexual abuse of children.
I'm Catholic and live in the us. It's a combination of things. A lot of the evangelical churches teach that Catholicism is not Christianity and that catholics worship Satan.
Because people are finally waking up to the fact that it's all man-made bullshit!
