Why does everyone I tell always have a tone of disgust and surprise when I tell them that I’m a Catholic who just happens to be gay?

Some people may be quick to judge and label you as hypocritical.


Nobody likes hypocrites.


Also, the Catholic church’s scandals involving priests and homosexual pedophilia probably only further exasperate things.


So right there, you already have 2 layers of stigma and negative associations.


Then there’s organized religion in general.


Most people nowadays, especially online, are irreligious. So that’s layer 3.


So if you introduce yourself as a gay Catholic, your odds of offending someone is very likely.


When I hear you describe yourself like that, I withhold judgement, because I understand that there are contextual nuances that could be acceptable.


So, instead of jumping to conclusions, I’m willing to hear you out.


However, most people won’t give you the opportunity to explain yourself or elaborate, and they may assume the worst.

The context in which it should be acceptable on all fronts is if your sexual orientation is just that — your sexual orientation. If you are not practicing homosexuality by involving yourself in the actual ACT of it, and you are exercising self-control, as a priest is supposed to practice celibacy, then there should be no issue with your ORIENTATION as gay. There’s no biblical scripture that can be accurately quoted against you. In fact, it’s possible that Apostle Paul himself was gay — perhaps that is the ‘thorn’ in his side that he describes and perhaps that is why he was unmarried all his life and practiced celibacy.

On a side note, just as a disclaimer, I don’t have anything against the LGBTQ+ community. But if someone is to claim to identify with a particular religion, it is expected that they abide by the rules set by said religion. For example, you can’t have a materialistic Buddhist, a war-fighting Jainist, or a meat-eating vegan. In the same way, I don’t believe it’s possible to be a PRACTICING gay person while simultaneously calling yourself Catholic. Theist? Perhaps. Catholic? Not without scripture and centuries of church tradition cited against you by people.

If you are not following the rules of the bible, how are you Catholic? The holy books (hence, God's word) were meant for eternity; not version 1 or 1.0 of 200 versions till end of times.

The disgust is not 100% towards you being a homo. Part of it is for you calling yourself Catholic.

Because it's as retarded a concept as telling everyone you're a vegan, except on Thanksgiving.

You cannot be "gay and Catholic". Sure you can call yourself it, and have all the pretensions. But it's like saying you have a genuine fake Gucci handbag - you're only fooling yourself, and others are just playing along with your mental illness, and not to hurt your feelings.
