It talks about how those who are mesmerized by alcohol or passion end up with strange sites and impaired judgment and become incapable of navigating their life in a way that can protect them from danger and harm. Well, back then, wine was just a way of life, because the water could make you sick. But it tended to be weak in alcohol content. But one that is actively fermenting or becoming more alcoholic/potent has a effervescent effect and tastes "sparkling." It will get you drunk much quicker and you lose yourself vs. just staying hydrated with weak wine.
