    Self-Discipline
    Dichotomy of Control
    No Optimism

Self-discipline mainly with respect to thought patterns. Negative patterns should be challenged and gradually eradicated.

Dichotomy of control refers to recognizing not to stress out over things beyond our control.

No optimism is important. Optimism makes prophecies about the future which could very easily be incorrect and turn one into a pessimist. We should avoid optimism as we do pessimism and instead becoming positive realists.

To me people tend to incorrectly label optimism and pessimism using the glass is half-full vs. half-empty analogy. Both to me are realistic interpretations of the present and equally valid, but one is positive and likely to make us happy and one is negative and likely to make us unhappy.

Optimism to me revolves around future expectations, like expecting someone else to buy us a drink and deriving happiness based on that hope and expectation. It can set us up for disappointment.

Pessimism to me also revolves around future expectations, like expecting no one to buy us a drink and deriving sadness based on that despair and expectation.

So I think forget the future and just enjoy the fact that the glass is half-full and have a good time with what we have now.

Cheers! Something interesting I learned the other day also was that the Amish actually have less than 1% of their population suffering from depression. How could that be with a people who have so little in the way of possessions and whose idea of fun involves activities like quilting and canning foods (something most of us would likely associate as work and expect payment)?

And I think at least one reason is because they have little room for optimism and pessimism. There's not much to expect positively or negatively deep into the future. They're not aiming to become rock stars, or own mansions, or the flashiest cars, or become celebrities, or anything else of this sort. They mostly live their lives one day at a time.

Monks often do the same, like Zen Buddhist monks. They reduce themselves to the simplest lives with the bare minimum of possessions, and I think that has the effect of allowing them to enjoy the present as much as possible without basing their happiness or sadness on expectations towards the future.

I don't want to live like a Zen Buddhist monk or an Amish and want to be a bit more ambitious than that, but I think there's wisdom in that lifestyle that we can derive even when living in a very urban society. If we can mitigate our optimism and pessimism towards the future, then we can liberate the shackles which bind our happiness to the future (something beyond our control) and base it more on the present (something immediately within our control).

Always compare yourself with the people who do not have what you have. Think about every little blessing. Never look up to the people who "you think" are in better shape than you.
