Some fundamentalist Christians denominations preach that people should not drink alcohol. Most "dry" counties were in the Bible Belt.

When Jesus laid out how the Lord's Supper was to be done in remberance of him and his sacrifice he said the loaf of bread to be broken in half was his giving of his body for you, and the cup of wine was yhe cup of the new covenant in his blood a d everyone present was to partake of the loaf in his remembrance and he said of the cup of wine drink ye all of it, meaning everyone present was to drink from the cup of wine so if you abstain from alcohol you couldn't take part in the Lord's Supper. Which doesn't align with the request of Jesus to " Do this in remembrance of me."

No, the largest Christian religion, Roman Catholic, includes alcohol in The Mass, its main celebration. And priests and nuns have some of the largest wine cellars ever seen.

Yes. In the past alcohol was important because it ensured water was safe to drink. It was far safer to drink beer than the local well water and monks were well known for running breweries or producing wine.

But today alcoholic drinks are much stronger and the evils caused far outweigh any health benefits. There's plenty of other safe sources of hydration so it seems logical that Christians should abstain.

I don't think so. I never really was around it, though, so I honestly forget it's an option unless I'm cooking. One cup of red wine and seared brisket in a crockpot for twelve hours or so, and even the strictest of teetotalers will say, "Amen"! :D

There's no absolute prohibition of alcohol in the Bible. Christian are counseled against drunkenness, but that doesn't mean they can't have the occasional tipple. Indeed Jesus drank wine.
