Do you think the Bible is still relevant in today's society (Specifically the New Testament)?

It seems that more than ever, the commands of Jesus are seen as signs of weakness: loving your enemies, forgiving those who trespass against you, blessing those who curse you, doing good to those who hate you, and praying for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience are all signs of weakness in today's society.

Society praises politicians, athletes, and entertainers who lash out and insult those who they think disrespected them. Bragging is seen as a sign of strength. If someone wrongs you, you're supposed to lash out and shame them, not forgive them. Twitter feuds, political feuds, bragging etc are all accepted as normal today.

Is being a good Christian a sign of weakness/wussiness?

Of course it is. The truths revealed are eternal and therefore are not relevant to just one period of time, despite atheists', liberals', and for that matter, Modernist Catholics' yacking on about "it's x-year, get with the program!"

Not that Modernist Catholics have many substantial differences with atheists and liberals anyway, but I digress.

Many people today, including many Christians have this weird idea that to be a Christian means being an effeminate doormat. This is not the case at all. As a case in point, I'd point to Jesus' cleansing of the temple, before which He fashioned a whip (which would have taken time and thought; proportionality) and during which He yelled and screamed at people and flipped tables.

There have also been many Saints who had more choleric temperaments and aggressive personalities.

Saint Thomas Aquinas was tempted by a prostitute and he swung a torch at her to chase her away.
Read about what happened when Saint Louis de Montfort's parish mission wad interrupted and disrupted by a handful of drunks.
When physically attacked by a group of his friends wanting to test him, on account of his typically calm and gentle personality, Saint Francis de Sales beat the melee back (and was also apparently a skilled swordsman).
Padre Pio was known to slap people while hearing their Confessions.

And while I'm not the biggest fan of John Paul II these days, it's at least worth noting his public scolding of Ernesto Cardenal, a dissenting priest in Nicaragua.

Plus, in the older rite of Confirmation, the bishop would give the candidate a light slap, so as to remind them to strengthen his or her self and prepare for resistance and spiritual battle.

So no, being a Christian does not mean being effeminate, a doormat, a hippie, or any other goofy thing like that.

yes, but i think like all time, we really botch it. there's a few people being christ like. maybe even many. But a lot are not.

Jesus said he's spit us out when we show up. That's a motivator. Im not living up to standards, I need a revival.

Unlike so many self-professed Christians, I don't need to consult a book in order to be sure that being nice to others is just the right thing to be. If you only act in the manner you do because you want to get into heaven (or avoid going to hell), then you're not a good person, because your motives aren't pure.

Well, the Bible has become a part of American culture whether you are religious or not. A lot of common names come from the Bible, and expressions we use do to. Being religious is also seen as a conservative thing, but ironically liberal type of values like humans having rights or murder being wrong came from Christianity. Society was a lot more brutal before that... you have to get deep into the history of it all though. There are books on this topic that could answer your question better.

A value system must be torn down in order for something else to take its place.
I’m not religious at all, but whatever comes next will be far worse, i guarantee it.
People like to examine some of the worst things religions groups have done and point out the hypocrisy. But as religious convictions have waned over the last few decades, have things gotten better? Are people persecuting others less? Is there less crime? Is there less poverty? Is there less war? No? Why not? If secular groups are so damn righteous by comparison, show us the results! Shouldn’t be too hard to outperform those evil religious zealots, huh? Ell oh ell!

Keep in mind the time that Jesus walked the earth his teachings were revolutionary. So the fact that society today has rejected his teachings and gone the opposite way doesn't diminish the Truth of His teaching and for me shows the fact that He understood how relevant they would be throughout time.

He told us the world will be evil or live backwards until His return. Christians should always do what we know if right; follow Him!

Nope, it’s 2024, if humans have not developed sufficiently not to require a book written thousands of years ago well before the modern era to understand right from wrong, that being nice to each other is in the interest of everyone, then we are doomed.

Why do people need a book just to have common decency to others?
Then you have that this book, which is about being nice to others, being used to condemn gays etc.

The Bible is pretty clear that Christians can call disbelievers all sorts of names and that beating up or killing in self defense is totally fine. You just don't hate your brother so to speak or spread Christianity through violence. When people are shitheads Christians can serve justice.

I think the real issue is the definition of Christian values. If they’re what the most outspoken “Christians” espouse in the political arena, I want absolutely none of it. I don’t even believe many of them have ever read the Bible, and certainly not the New Testament.
