As an atheist, it offends me (& polytheists) that I have to see & handle currency that has "In God We Trust". Courts say its fine!

The First Amendment to the U. S. Constitution has two provisions concerning religion. The Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause. The Establishment Clause prevents the government from establishing a religion. Requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments in every classroom violates that. The U. S. Supreme Court in Lemon v. Kurtzman, 403 U. S. 602 (1971) ruled that government can assist religion only if (1) the primary purpose of the assistance is secular, (2) the assistance must neither promote nor inhibit religion, and (3) there is no excessive entanglement between church and state. What Louisiana is doing is not secular. It promotes one religions and inhibits other religions. There is excessive entanglement between church and state. So Louisiana fails all of those tests.

The Free Exercise Clause protects citizens' right to practice their religion as they please, so long as the practice does not run afoul of a "public morals" or a "compelling" governmental interest. So Louisiana fails again. This should make it to the Supreme Court which will (again) say what they are doing is unconstitutional, and will cost the state a lot of money trying to support their illegal law. The citizens of Louisiana who have not lost their minds should immediately recall all the dimwits who supported this garbage!

As a militant atheist I think put up the Ten Commandments. It will remind kids how insecure “god” is. Over half (first half) is god commanding us to worship him. That’s a pretty feckless god.

Keep it all up. The best weapon FOR atheism is reading more about Christianity.

The thing is atheism IS a religion. That’s what most people don’t understand nor want to accept.

Being “religious” doesn’t always stipulate that you have believe in a higher power and/or an afterlife. One of the definitions of religion are:

“a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance”

You can be both secular AND religious at the same time. Those two definitions aren’t mutually exclusive. And most if not all human beings want to believe in something. If isn’t God then it’s often a different set of ideals. And those secular ideals are now about “equality” and “social justice”. That’s why some people like global warming activists are so deranged they are now defacing monuments like Stonehenge. That’s why lgtbq (plus the alphabet) are so obsessed about pushing their ideals on society (including in public schools). And they have really pushed much harder and farther then just putting up the 10 commandments in a school classroom.

Still though I’m not gung ho about having the 10 commandments up in school rooms in public school class rooms. While I do believe it’s a very good thing I don’t want the left conveniently fixate on this (and they will) to make up “Christian nationalism” bs accusations. It’s like how the fixated on J6 for ad nauseum as an excuse and distraction from the mass destruction the BLM riots did in 2020. Funny how quickly the mass media buried that once they had an excuse to focus on J6.

This is from the Ten Commandments:

1. You shall have no other gods before me

2. You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God

3. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy

Clearly, this goes against freedom of speech since it promotes silencing of other religion followers, “have no other gods before me” & against freedom of religion, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy”.

When faced with the facts, someone called me a “simp” & a “commie”, to quote “go back to China”, idc about that however I went out of my way to explain the founding fathers of how they wanted separation of church and state so much so they didn’t establish one religion above all else since they saw this country as you can practice your religion, give faith to your God, and uphold your culture as holding the label forever, “American”. I stand for the founders way and stand for Freedom of Religion & Freedom of Speech. It was brought to my attention the person who pushed this law in Louisiana said it was on a historical basis NOT a religious one so, in that case I agree it should be posted in the original Hebrew language as it was written in. this should be irrelevant because the SCOTUS already ruled on this sort of thing in 1980 that requiring the Ten Commandments in schools is a violation of the Establishment Clause.

The GOP is now always doing shit like this: Enacting blatantly unconstitutional laws just to score points with voters or to rile them up.

"In God we trust" is so minor that I literally don't care. 100% of the people working in the treasury department could be atheists for all we know, it's just a cultural tradition with the vaguest of intent.

I'm an practicing Catholic and here's my take, are the ten commandments good? Obviously.

Should the ten commandments be in public school? No, we have separation of church and state in the USA, whether that's good bad or indifferent isn't really up for debate.

My parents wanted that education for me so I went to Catholic school. It was private so, problem solved. You can't inject this into a government organization. Yes we say under God in the pledge of allegiance and yes the USA was founded as a nation of Christians but it is not a Christian nation.

I honestly think this was done as a ploy. They know they'll lose in court and then they can say Christians are under attack (which we are but this is stupid) but this is fruitless.

1# If you have a problem with the way the country was founded then I don’t really know what to tell you. Move somewhere else?

2# your a minority, there is zero reason to make a change like that to accommodate so few people. If anything it’s selfish to expect and entire country to radically change stuff on that scale when you don’t even amount to 5% of the population here. And even if they did stop putting it on money you’d still see it on virtually every coin and bill for the next hundred years at least because they’re not going to take that money out of circulation. And there are so many coins and bills that say that, that those changes wouldn’t been widespread till probably after you were dead.

Just think of what "In God We Trust" really means...

Sign on store wall... "In God we trust, all others pay cash."

And if you're upset about displaying the 10 Commandments, just don't look at them. Remember that the 10 Commandments have historical significance, and don't emphasize any particular religion. Christians, Jews and Muslims (that's almost 1/3 of the world's population) all have the story of Moses in their history.

The problem is when you put "Thou shalt not make craven images" on the same footing as "thou shalt not kill" you lessen the seriousness of the second. Nothing encourages kids to break a rule than having it shoved in their face.
