How are there still people who want christian nationalism?

Christian nationalism is the worship of unimpeachable power but often using Christianity as a disguise or excuse (though there are definitely atheists who also salivate profusely at the thought of posessing unimpeachable power, but subscribe to a bunch of modern culture-based grievance myths instead of historical religion-based grievance myths) - and Christian nationalism has pretty much taken over the republican party. This wouldn't be an issue except that people who call themselves Christians overwhelmingly lean republican, thus indicating that most of those who call themselves Christians are actually just Christian nationalists. How is the Christian religion so susceptible to this false sincerity? How is it that what are basically con artists manage to so easily take over without anyone telling them to keep their antichristic idea out? It doesn't speak well of the absolute moral authority of a worshipped diety if that god can't even make his leaders stay true to His teachings.
