What makes some people turn against religion even when they're raised in a religious household?

Some people grow up and follow how they were raised. By logic if you're raised in a religious household then you'll likely believe in god and religion. But it had the opposite effect on me. I always knew I was an atheist, even when I couldn't speak up during my younger years. Now I'm outspoken about it. This obviously surprised several older family members. I was very drunk the very first time I told them all about it. Even as a kid I was very chatty and inquisitive about everything, asking wanting answers to things that didn't convince me. If they couldn't give me a good answer, I would search online.

What makes others be like me, even if raised religious?

No one turns against religion, any more than people can turn against oxygen. They turn against their people, their culture or their family etc. But some people just like to be edgy pricks or passport hunters.

No one has ever successfully rationalised what you're claiming. Hence you're either talking shit, or you've not grown out your teen angst phase. Although it's possible you're just getting back at your family the worst way you can think.

No one is an "atheist," you need to prove you are atheist as a rock to start things off. Hence at best you can only believe to be on a par with a rock.

For your situation, I'm putting you in the "edgy prick, trying to get back at their family". As it seems you were insufferable and your family told you to fuck off and be quiet. You compartmentalised it as being the fault of "religion" rather than your family just not able to put up with your autism and incessant noise. Few others are "like you" and even less "like you", as it's why you're in the position you are.

Just because a family is "religious" does not mean they are "good and game" for any shenanigans.

No one is born being religious nor even knowing the word god. That's indoctrinated at an early age and when a baby is baptized, isn't that already taking away their choice to what they want to believe or not. They're already forcing religion by baptizing a baby, an innocent little person.

I'm not getting back at anyone. I'm calling out what it is and how much I've been tolerating things (all those years of silence when I was a minor) that don't make sense.

There's no one cut-and-dry answer. There are many reasons why it could be. It could be the manner in which the faith was communicated; a child might ask questions of parents and not receive satisfying answers, or the religious leader might have taught the faith poorly in services (as a Catholic, I can tell you all sorts of horror stories of ugly churches or liturgies; thank God I found the Traditional Latin Mass). It could also be scandals, bad examples, or general culture within the religion. There's also the question of abuse in the home or the church. The child might be swayed by emotional and aggressive arguments from atheists (or another religion entirely) or their own passions and desires.

Those are just the reasons that immediately come to mind for me. I'm sure there are loads of others that I haven't thought of.

Setting bad examples is definitely a good reason. Then getting replied by answers that don't make sense is another reason too. I think the first mistake they ever make is baptizing a baby, whom is innocent and taken away their choice whether they want to participate on the event or not and assuming the person will follow that tradition when they grow up.

If they want to and there is a 50/50 chance the child will develop their own personality and might not follow their beliefs.

By raising the kid with their own beliefs, you're basically doing that... that's your beliefs but might not be what the child believes in.

Indeed. It's similar to when I would be told about Santa Claus coming with his reindeers to deliver presents. Even as a little kid, I didn't think it made sense. I remembered asking a bunch of questions such as how does he have time to deliver all presents to millions of kids in the world in just one day, where are the flying reindeers and why can't we see them, how does Santa knows it's you, etc.
It's funny how certain family members try to then tell the kid to stop questioning things too much.

I would assume, it's because they were raised in a religious household. You can't make people believe in a religion, either they develop a faith on their own or they don't.

Then when the kid asks valid questions, they're dismissed for asking too much and want them to just be convinced to believe in it.

Oh, absolutely. A Turkish friend of mine was turned away from religion because he was beaten by the religion teacher in school for asking questions.

That's a great, perfect reason to turn against it. So in the end he won and the teacher lost because he/she couldn't prove their points nor come up with a good backup answer without beating the kid, lol.

According to an ex Christian website most heard about a "holy" man getting caught in bad behavior.

Which doesn't prove the faith was wrong!

So they left instead of realizing people get tempted.
