If marriage already existed before religion, why do some think it's pointless without religion?

If anything religion and churches came afterwards. Marriage have already existed before religion so why do some people think it's pointless without religion. It doesn't make sense. It started without religion. So they're actually contradicting themselves. So the ancient people's concept of marriage had no meaning?

The concept of marriage was there long before the development of organized religions. There have been marriage practices found in ancient civiliations like Mesopotamia, way back before even bibles existed. It started as a social institute, not a religious practice.

If, then still no motivation for atheists to obey commitments unless god is watching. But truly marriage is due to faith in gods... admittedly before church but due to faith in gods

yeah it's hard. I couldn't understand someone's claims about the destruction of Christian values breaking-up marriages. It didn't make sense.

The earliest marriage ceremonies were was set to have started in Mesopotamia around 2350 B. C. For ancient Greeks and Romans, it was an institution. Churches got involved much later on. It was really a social contract that had the purpose of improving family situation and adding to the community.
