The bible says, “all hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”

Which to me means, it does not matter how intelligent or good looking you are, or how rich your family is, if you do not work hard, you will not succeed, and if you do succeed, your success will be combined with horrible problems like disease, teeth pain, mental illness, domestic violence, shortened life span, bad social partners, anxiety disorders, or sleeping problems etc…

This is wisdom found in mythologies across the world. The English back when we were pagan would make Beot (a promise) at the meadhall, where they would boast something like being the first to kill an enemy in battle, or any other impressive feat. The hero of English folklore, Beowulf, makes a Beot that he will kill the monster Grendel with his bare hands.

Even if you failed the Beot, your pride & attempt to uphold your word earned you respect.

The word "word" itself, and the word "weird" came from an Anglo-Saxon & wider Germanic (including the Vikings) conception of fate, which could be manipulated with magic. Not fantasy magic but speech, oaths, trickery, deceit (the dishonour of a lie would negatively impact ones wyrd as noone has faith in their words) etc.

The Roman Tacitus described the Germanics as placing comitatus (commitment) as an essential value for the formation of the vary warrior bands & kingdoms that inhabited Germania. Woden / Odin / Godan himself was the chief god of the Pagan English & was the deity of runes (that create words), poetry, fate, life & death aswell as oaths.

I'm sure you can find many other examples too, such as the Celtic oath culture.

The English considered a "Warloga" to be an oath breaker. The "Loga" in this word is cognate with locks 🔒, locks of flame 🔥 (fire spreading chaos) and also "Loki", a Germanic shape shifting devil of deceit & trickery who in Norse texts (very likely what the English would've believed too) is condemned by the Aesir to be tied to a stone & tortured by the venom of a snake for killing Odin's son, Baldur & all his other foul trickery.
Loki's wife Angrboda protects him by holding up a bowl to collect the snakes poison. However when the bowl overflows she has to pour it on the floor as poison drips onto Loki. His suffering is said to be what causes earth quakes when he screams. Earth quakes form cracks in the ground which people can be trapped in.
Loki was also associated with fishing nets (more entrapment) what Swedes call "Lokespindlers" (daddy long legs, long legged spiders who trap spiders around their legs & poison them. Normal spiders are directly associated with fate & witchcraft in Germanic mythology so Loki deceives & traps fate).
He's is also the father of many chaotic devils & spirits such as Fenrir & Jormungandr, & very strangely the mother of Sleipnir who is a water horse (like the Scottish Kelpie) that Odin rides.
