I think they said that because somebody took pride in their hair, their hair led to their downfall. Because somebody else took pride in something else, that thing became their downfall.
There was a beautiful woman I knew as a teenager that was always popular, well-liked and respected for being attractive and she loved to brag and show off and be snobby about her beautiful appearance and then she became morbidly obese in the years preceding her wedding and the birth of her children, losing her legacy as being the beauty queen that everybody liked.
There was an intelligent guy I used to know who had a lot of pride and ego and would mock those who were inferior to him academically and professionally, even harassing them, and plotting their bullying violence. And then he got into a car accident that led to brain damage and now for over 12 years or more, he has been jobless and pretending to be employed. His wife left him because he was abusing her while not having any kind of income at all, and now his ex-wife is married to somebody else and has a kid with her new husband while he is single with no chance of a new relationship because he is brain damaged and pretending to have a job.
