Why is not being religious evil?

Question

They say bad people have it better because devil takes care of his people. God's people have it hard because of tests.

In the end people who are freezing won't bat an eye as long as anything keeps them warm.

Now I am no satanist but what exactly is God testing us for? What kind of father punishes his kids for not accepting his love?

I am just a really lost confused kid. I am not here to criticize anyone's choices, I just have questions now and then. That's what kids do, they ask.

If people are telling you that all the hardships in your life are part of “God’s plan” then that’s just how they cope with shitty things happening. It can feel incredibly dismissing.

Think of it less as “being tested” by god and more as “being written” by god. Assume your life is a story, and no good story exists without some kind of conflict. Struggles, stress, suffering, these are all necessary to make your character more likable, relatable, opportunities to learn. God isn’t your teacher, you are the only one that helps you learn things. You have to teach yourself whatever lesson you want to learn from whatever’s happening. Who do you want to be? How will this experience help you become that person? You can’t learn compassion without knowing hardship, kindness without knowing cruelty, love without knowing hate, all of these things exist together and trying to separate them is essentially impossible. And sometimes the lesson learned is “this place is not showing me how to be who I want to be” and you leave whatever church you’re in. I had issues with the church as an institution and the way they unintentionally framed god as cruel and hateful towards anyone that didn’t follow him, using that as an excuse to go after groups of people they didn’t agree with, as well as just making it all about money. Do what’s best for you, find whatever spirituality speaks to you, and don’t let the shame of being different stop you

Oh, good questions. I still ask them too. But for me I came to realize I believe in a God , I just don't believe the Bible is the word of God. It is the word of men. So, I pretty much tossed the whole thing out and became a pagan, witch and I'm much happier now.

The Gods and Goddesses I believe in don't "test" or "condemn" me to a life in hell for disagreeing with them. They support my free will.

I would differentiate between organised religion and a personal relationship with God.

Organised religion usually is about cultural compulsion, superstition, fear mongering and sexual repression. From a certain perspective, you could say that is where the evil lies.

Your other options are generally agnosticism, which makes some sense.

Or scientific materialism/atheism. I feel like a lot of problems in society in western society, are caused by this. By saying we have no soul, or nothing is of innate value; beyond conceptions based on pure physicality. That we're clever and know better. Western society is gutted by this materialism. Just take a critical lens and have a look at where western Europe is at. You know that feeling, that you chase a buzz, or you chase some object, you burn yourself out; and ultimately, there is nothing there, it was all an illusion. And you're ultimately feeling hollow. I would say spirituality or God is the antidote to that.

My advice is to find something that resonates with you. Did you ever try Osho? He's a bit of a controversial character. But he is one of the best subversive gurus. Krishnamurti is good, too. Alan Watts of course.

But you will find the right path. You are critical and think for yourself. It will stand you in good stead.

"What kind of father punishes his kids for not accepting his love?" Certainly a troubled father. About punishment, this father figure to obey to can be seen in terms of social control, like a story reminding all kids to do as dad says, and all adults to do as the leader says. This story, if you convince enough people to believe in it, can very much be used to establish civil order.  "That's what kids do, they ask" And much too often, the answer received is to stop asking questions. That, or an answer that prevents asking further questions. A kid is much easier to control that way, by extension, it should also produce more obedient adults. Back to social control.

That's as daft as asking "what are traffic speed limits for?"

You claim to see the road was "empty" and "sure" of your abilities, so why did the cop with a speed gun at the end of the road give you a speeding ticket and citation for other flaws in your car?

That's the thing about not "being religious" you're not aware of the rules and laws, and end up falling foul as a result. Then end up in the shitter and breaking more rules and laws.

As the old saying goes "playing dumb or ignorant of the laws, does not provide immunity from the laws."

My response to this guys question gives a better understanding on how it works, it's not about making people suffer, nor does Satan take care of his people, he uses them and later on betrays them by pulling them to hell, the only escape from hell is God, because a world without God isn't what God made you for, so choosing to deny him in your life, takes salvation with him.

The says in Genesis that our Father and Mother, were given a simple choice of obedience or disobedience to God. They chose to disobey God. But God sent Jesus to pay for our sins. All you got to do is confess with your mouth and believe on him. Get born again. That is the Christian answer. As far as testing is concerned, we have no idea when God is actually testing us or not. This world is bad, and thus we live in it, and got to put up with the bad things in it. The only fair thing about life is that it is not fair to anyone.

and people are bad... religious or not, all capable of the very same evil (I speak in general, not to the individual level)

Not being religious does not make someone evil. That's just religious dogma that believers say to justify their own alleged superiority.

If you need religion to scare you into being a good person, because you fear eternal retribution, then you're not really a good person at all. The non-believer who is a good person without the promise of punishment, or reward, is the better person.

Who says it is? I live in Seattle and none of my friends are religious. Most of the professionals in Seattle are not religious. I don't know where you live. If you will be an adult at 18, and you are able, you might consider moving to a place where people are less religious. In general, academic communities are less religious than the general population.
