Does status corrupt people that do not have reliable moral rules?

I find morals are simpler when you are poor. I have met elite people whose minds are so heavily encased in behavioural bias, they will interpret any innocent and non-offensive act as a moral crime or vicious behavioural flaw.

I was yelled at by a rich person for saying I hated our old mayor for wasting over 50,000,000 dollars on an unnecessary election, out of her desire to retire a few years earlier than previously agreed on to be the mayor.

This person thought my viewpoint a person should limit unnecessary public spending by putting the needs of society above their own, was a ridiculous and highly offensive viewpoint, that limited the mayor’s career aspirations.

And basically every time I expressed my opinion on any topic at all, they would get angry and act like I was morally offensive and logically incompetent.

Status does not corrupt. These people were already corrupt inside long before they had status. The status simply gives them the freedom to express their true nature.
