What does the ‘no idols’ law in Deuteronomy 5 really prohibit?

I believe it means not to worship people for their appearance, their intelligence, their clothes, charm, their sophistication, their gender traits, their evocativeness, or even their heroic deeds. To understand they are humans with normal flaws and not angels. And to understand respect should be earned, not given automatically due to cultural and genetic traits.

No idols means , no carved images or statues, crosses or emblems or other god are to be worshipped or bowed down to. God is the only one who deserves your worship and without idols
