How can I discern if God is guiding my friendships and relationships?

I had a dream telling me I had to be more selective about who I chose to be friends with.

I used to think that because Jesus was friends with people who sinned and lived ungodly lives, that God also wanted me to be friends with those that sinned and lived ungodly lives.

I still try to show normal courtesy to others, but after receiving death threats for 3 years by an evil friend that I waited 3 years to reject, I am now more careful about who I choose to be friends with.
