i know nothing of these pacific islands but i can tell you that I've seen sick shit from all groups. The way sick perverts who sexualize everything are formed is they as children are accused of something sexual while being innocent, so they see innocent things as sexual their entire life. It is trauma and generational trauma but religion is just an excuse to keep it running. As such even non religious people do it. Religions are just cover stories.

There is a reason for the title "catholic schoolgirl syndrome". Catholics can be very sick. But yes, my experience with protestant-church-going parents is fucked up. And also Mennonites who are neither protestant nor catholic, i also saw some chill groups and some also extremely fucked up. The Mennonite elementary school principal would constantly joke about morning wood in front of clueless children at least a hundred times and it definitely was not funny but some freudian unconscious slipping through.
