This is my thing.
Atheism refers to a lack of believe in God. Theism refers to a belief in God.
Gnosticism refers to you knowing so being a gnostic believer in God means you know God exists and being a gnostic atheist means you know God doesn't exist.
Agnosticism refers to a lack of knowledge, or often, the believe that it can't be known for sure. So an agnostic atheist would believe God doesn't exist but not be sure. An agnostic theist would believe God does exist but not be sure.
I think it's definitely worth noting, however, that God can often be a pretty difficult-to-pin down concept. I'd say atheism was invented as a reflection of society's dominant views of God, so atheism has a general meaning, but not a definite one, because so many people have so many different views of what God is.
I'd say atheists are probably best described as people who do not believe in an intelligent ruler or rulers of the galaxy who has powers that ignore the laws of nature everything else must adhere to.
I think the "God" or gods needs to have powers that ignore the laws of nature everything else must adhere to, because if it's just a powerful mind or something, that might include prospects like a computer that controls our universe through a simulation, and that's not something atheists would necessarily not believe in.
Narcissism and/or egocentrism. They do not believe in a higher power. If there is no higher power, then the conclusion must be that the ego is all there is. No creator? Then there is no design to the universe. And the science atheists tend to cling to explains what?
The irony is that both atheistic scientists and religious scholars are searching for the ultimate truth of the universe. One says it's God, the other hasn't found it yet.
#1. Neither side has found it yet. God is not an answer, for God is undefined.
#2. There's nothing inherently egotistical or narcissistic about one's perception of how the universe works, any more than there would be to believing in quantum mechanics or electricity.
The practiced unbelief of the Creator God.
