Racism kills, and a new study on the potentially harmful effects of chemical hair straighteners has shown the paradox many nonwhite people face when forced to conform to white beauty standards.

Late last week, the National Institutes of Health released findings from a study that suggested women who use chemical hair straighteners could have a higher risk of developing uterine cancer than those who do not use them.

As NBC News reported:

Women using chemical hair-straightening products are at a higher risk of uterine cancer than women who reported not using them, a new study by the National Institutes of Health found. Researchers noted that Black women may have a higher risk because they are more likely to use such products more frequently. A group of researchers with the NIH’s National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences looked at the hair care habits of more than 33,000 women and found that those who used chemical hair straightening products at least four times a year were more than twice as likely to develop uterine cancer.

Studies like this are precisely why activists and lawmakers have been demanding full passage of the Crown Act, a federal bill that would ban discrimination based on hair style and texture.

There is a stereotype that men are more visual and usually have their minds made up with 30 seconds of meeting a woman if they are interested or not.

To a certain extent that’s true. If a girl is a 5 or below to me physically I am not going to be romantically interested no matter what her personality is. That doesn’t mean I won’t treat her respectfully and be friendly (if she’s got a cool personality). I won’t be rude if she happens to show me interest (will politely decline if need be) But I can’t develop feelings.

But I am thinking that many women are more superficial than ever nowadays when it comes to looks (except if they guy is rich and/or famous)

That’s not to say they shouldn’t have standards. I don’t expect a beautiful 22 yr old woman to not reject a chubby balding 35 yr old guy. But I notice that the less attractive a man is to a woman the more difficult, challenging and bitchy she will be to him.

I know this because I’m my 20s most women considered me a 8 to 9 physically. I’ve gotten older and while I am in great shape for my age the truth is most women see me around a 7 now. They are more difficult and rude in dating situations. They ghost more. I am held to a higher standard on my behavior on the first date.

I don’t expect everything to be willy nilly easy like it was when I was 25. But the fact that: “first impression (looks) = likeability = respect” is depressing.
