Search Results: the real meaning of love

So basically I was reading an article the other day about how Ruby Rose, a gender fluid, bisexual actress, was harassed on Twitter after being cast as Batwoman, a lesbian Jewish character, on a show of the same name on the CW. *Some* people were outraged because apparently Rose doesn't represent the Jewish and Lesbian communities, even though she can act those characteristics into the show (as opposed to enactable features such as skin color, gender, etc.) I thought the point of acting was to portray something that isn't real. Just to be clear, these criticisms were not (explicitly) about her (lack of ) ability to portray a Jewish Lesbian character as a result of poor acting skills, but rather about her not being Jewish and Lesbian, and therefore not being able to represent those communities.
When did TV show casting become more about representation than acting skills?

P. S. This is the CW, meaning the show will have tons of PC messages, just like Supergirl. Just hope it's not too on-the-nose.
