Feminine and masculine; why we have to stop putting labels on It

I feel like I see a lot of things (especially on here) that list traits and qualities that make a woman feminine and a man masculine, I feel that's wrong.

As I said in a take I answered yesterday, I feel all men are masculine. Unless the guy is going around wearing a tutu and singing Dancing Queen by ABBA, all men are masculine. The is no one trait that makes one man more masculine then the other.

I feel all woman are feminine, as well. Unless she's shopping in the mens clothing section and whistling at girls as they walk by, all woman are feminine. There is no one trait that makes one woman more feminine then the other.

Example: Is a guy who cries actually less masculine then one who doesn't?

Answer: No, it just means one guy has an easier time with his emotions than the other. But, the guy who allows himself to cry is not less masculine then the one who doesn't. And, the one who isn't good with emotions isn't more masculine then the one that is.

Example: Is a girl who loves going to the mall and getting her nails done more feminine then one who doesn't?

Answer: No, it just means one girl likes doing that stuff and for the other girl it's just not her cup of tea. But, the girl who loves the mall and enjoys getting her nails done is not more feminine then the one who doesn't. And, the one who doesn't enjoy doing those two things isn't less feminine then the one who does enjoy doing those things.

Conclusion: There's no need to stick labels on men and women or try to define which makes one more feminine or masculine then the other. Everybody is different in their own way. Everybody has something that they like to do and don't like to do. Everybody has something that makes them who they are. But, just because some of the things we like or don't like are not within are specific gender roles, doesn't mean we are any less feminine or masculine for it. It's just means we're an indivdual and that's definitely okay.

So, let's please stop with the gender labeling because while you think you might be boosting that masculine man or feminine womans ego. All you're really doing is making those men who don't fall under those "what makes you masculine" label feel, is really crappy and like they are somehow less of a man because he doesn't like to start fights with people who took his parking spot.

As for women, all you're doing there is making those women who don't fall under the "what makes you feminine" label feel, is also really crappy and like they are somehow less of a woman because she doesn't like to watch romantic movies like the Notebook.

Let's just put a stop to gender labeling and just realize all men and women are masculine and feminine in their own way and that's okay.

Creating this society also damages boys. Their failing out of school at an alarming rate because the school system is geared towards girls, boys are seen not as rambunctious boys but as broken girls. This new society which is trying to tell boys it's "OK to cry" also tell them to NOT be boys. "Don't be so loud", "Don't be so rough", etc.
The society which said "be a man" was one which allowed boys to be boys. It didn't treat them like broken girls and women were happier. SO the historical data shows that this new idea of uni-generalizing the society has more bad than good.

Going to give you a rather vague answer hear I'm sorry - but it might shed some light on how I feel about people being "labelled" things.

Human beings label things. It makes it easy to process and pass on vital information quickly. When early man and our neanderthalic ancestors (and woman) - see how much longer that took to write and process btw? remember that its important were engaged in a more primitive form of life - on the savanah of Africa, began to learn how to communicate verbally, information was more important than gold. It was literally the difference between life and death. What mattered most was survival - and speed and clarity were vital in getting across vital info such as "that animal is dangerous" or "those berries bad".

Obviously time has moved on, and society with it. We lead more slow, sedentary lives where we are not always an instant away from being eaten alive by a Lion. With that pressure released we begin to be able to sit and think a bit. But our brains still tell us to make quick decisions about everything. That's the "instinct" that's inside us - the first impressions we make, the "gut" calls we make - we've evolved for them to be important and we still feel this today. People always say "go with your first instinct", or "trust your gut".

Yes there are times when we are able to go into depth and detail on a subject - and then we should do. This is vital also (judging each case on its merits we could say) so that we can pragmatically come to the right answer in as many cases as possible - but many times in life we simply don't have the time for that. In these cases labels help us quickly and easily identify one thing from another.

For right or wrong society (at least our culture - others are different), has assigned gender roles. Take your example of girls being expected to have their nails done to be considered "feminine". There is a reason for this. We know this - so we can make a quick judgement on her presumed femininity because of this. We might be wrong - there could be a health reason she can't do her nails for example - or she might simply disagree with the expected gender norm society assigns her, but unless we take the time to investigate we don't know this so we go with the label.

Your point is we don't need labels. I say we do - until we dig a little deeper. But we can't always dig deeper (for time reasons etc) so for society to work we all make these judgments every day..

Kids these days are so clueless. Have you ever taken a biology course. Estrogen and testosterone produce COMPLETELY different behaviors in a person. Things like physical beauty, displays of emotion, shyness, nurturing, etc are all feminine\estrogen traits. Testosterone\masculine traits are physical strength, emotional strength, assertiveness, courage, leadership, etc.

Men and women both have Estrogen and Testosterone, but each are dominant in one. Men can have anywhere from 10 to 50x as much Testosterone as women, and Women have anywhere from 10-25x as much Estrogen as men.

Ask any guy who's ever used steroids how they affect his mood. He feels more aggressive, assertive, confident, stronger, less emotional, until he goes into his "Post Cycle Therapy" where his estrogen is much higher than normal. During that time you feel more moody, emotional, can grow breasts without proper medication.

Men and women are different, and they are biologically and genetically designed to be different on purpose. Gender differences are not some societal construct made up to oppress women.

Why use masculine and feminine to describe behavior period?

If feminine is wo, smokiness -- which can be anything any woman died including shopping in men's depart, don't. And masculine is ms lines -- which can be the behavior of any man. Then using them as if they gave deeper meaning just crates false identification. Fir people if any sex.

A woman can lift weights she's still a woman. A guy can ask her a woman to hold him he's still a guy. Defining orople as more woman or more guy just obstructs any single persons ability to sort out who they actually are. And the words feminine and masculine be ime tools in that obstruction.

I don't think there is anything wrong with "labeling" someone according to how we view them.

I dress in mostly men's clothes because they're just more comfortable to me. I'm a tomboy, and I like to be ready for whatever. That's being said, steel toed boots before heels!
Because I dress "like a man", people assume that I MUST be a lesbian. I'm not at all into girls in a sexual manner.
I'm the "den mother" in my group, so all the guys always come to me for advice. No, there are attributes which favor a specific gender which is why they are labeled masculin (if they tend to be male oriented) or feminine (if they tend towards the female gender). It doesn't matter what you would preffer this is just fact. if you stop calling them masculin/feminine it wouldn't change anything because they will always be attributed to those genders. Whats important to note is that they will always be masculin and feminine and thats okay. Who does that? I have never in the entirety of my life seen/heard/experienced any one who reduced a person down to a single trait. If you have multiple feminine traits and your a guy yes people will point that out and give you crap for it but that is considerably different then suggesting that a singular trait is the sole desciding factor of ones masculinity/femininity. The fact is that a man who acts like a woman in all respects isn't masculine by definition, the same goes for women. Whether or not that matters can be argued but what can't be is the accuracy of the lables. We define behavior a certain way based upon attribution of a gender. Assume we stopped labeling things/people masculine or feminine verbally, it would change nothing aside from maybe sparing some hurt feelings of people who are bothered by it. We don't have to be told what is masculine or what is feminine. It is instinctually recognized. One day modern man decided to put a label on it to describe the idea. Honestly, other than fighting for this principle I'm sure there are real life examples of something or someone who is feminine and one who is masculine that you would agree with if presented.

I doesn't matter how PC you want to be, until the human race evolves out of sexual reproduction - probably not anytime soon - people will be thinking about what we perceive as a polarity (masculine vs. feminine). Given that that polarity exists, it is normal to identify which traits are most representative or those poles.

Therefor the more someone presents sexually typified behavior, the more masculine or feminine they will be perceived as being. You may as well ask people not to measure the height of buildings, the redness of apples, or any other trait that can be perceived. To pretend otherwise is ridiculous.

I don't that's her intent. What I am getting from this article is that she feels all men are masculine and all women are feminine (despite their hobbies, interests and appearance). Biology- says what is masculine (penis) and feminine (vagina/boobs) pretty clearly.

Socially- labels on men and women or trying to define which makes one more feminine or masculine then the other; I think its ok, but that alone does not make them all right or wrong. I personal think these traits of masculinity/femininity develop as we age; sometimes peoples belief system changes over time, so do these view points.

Legally- masculine and feminine traits are labeled by a country's belief system and those labels usually define the laws within that country. Anything else doesn't matter, so this is clear too.

I never said anything about giving up the words masculine and feminine. There are traits that although not 100% masculine/feminine are more or mainly to one side over the other.
Being highly emotional is more commonly female and not because of "society", it's simply part of natural differences between us. This has been studied in infants and shown that females are more compassionate over boys. So saying that crying is more feminine isn't "gender labelling" it's just accurate.
But I do agree that telling a boy to stop crying or to suck it up because 'only girls' cry is wrong because that isn't true.

I'd rather say everyone is both masculine and feminine, and they embody or express those aspect to different degrees or in different ways.
