I don't have a problem with people believing different from me, but if my reasoning for my actions is based on my religious beliefs, how would I explain such without speaking of religion?
I'm quite tired of a great many things going on in the world, but I don't become bothered when I hear of them, because they are the actions and/or interests of someone else.

I could only go as far as avoid the religious people like the pest as soon as they attempt to convert me. That's yet another form of a creeper in my eyes.
Yes, you are stupid and your religion is stupid, just stop.

It takes no courage to just shut up; it takes real courage to profess faith in the presence of hostility. I admire people who are not afraid.

Unfortunately, 'professing faith' is often bordering, or becoming, pushing faith onto someone else. Being unafraid is fine. This isn't about fear. It's about not throwing your beliefs around in public. Faith should be a private thing. What you have between yourself, and whoever your worship/believe in (or who you don't), shouldn't be anyone's business but your own. If everyone realised that, then the world would be a more peaceful, accepting place.
That would be quite intolerant and ignorant, not to say completely against his own Catholic religion ^^
And just for info, Catholics are Christian. Christian refers to all religious sects who believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ. So within Christianity, there are Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and other denominations
No but it's a belief on the same things as religions. Athiests believe there is no God, deity or higher power. Religious people often believe in some sort of God, deity or higher power. Therefore, they are grouped together...
No it's a belief that something doesn't exist. It's lack of belief in a religion yes, but the belief is thta there is no kind of higher power- still choice, still a belief.
For the purposes of this take, atheism and religion are grouped together. They are both personal beliefs relating to religion/deities, that should remain a personal, private matter.
Harassed? Are you kidding me? I can state my belief as long as I'm not forcing it on you. If you don't like my opinion than ignore it. Forcing me to shut up is the worst thing you can do. Free speech is an inalienable right while what you're talking about is a minor annoyance of hearing a point of view you don't agree with.
Harassment is defined as the systematic and/or continued unwanted and annoying actions of one party or a group. Being accosted on the street, being preached to, having doorknockers come to my home, and being told I am an idiot/a sinner/going to hell, or whatever punishment I get for not following a certain belief, ABSOLUTELY falls within the definition of harassment. By your logic, I could stop people on the street and tell them that they're wrong for wearing hats, because hats cause cancer. I could amass a following, buy billboard space, put ads on TV, and protest the use of hats. It's completely false, unnecessary, will annoy the living shit out of people, and possibly cause violence. But who cares if I'm harassing people, because freedom of speech, right?
You completely misunderstood what I wrote. YOU CAN STATE A BELIEF AS LONG AS YOU AREN'T SHOVING IT DOWN SOMEONE'S THROAT. What you're proposing is an end to all discussion where you may disagree with a person just because you're too sensitive. I've been annoyed by pro-lifers, religious bigots, liberals and who knows how many other people. I just ignored them even when they kept saying "You're going to hell". Sometimes I even responded "I'll see you there". This harassment you speak of is very rare. Most of the time it's just people having a debate and one side not being able to handle it and screaming "harassment".
See, if you people read my take properly, you'd know that I'm only referring to publicly announcing your beliefs. Like I said, 'If you don't go out of your way to notify people of your beliefs, they're not going to react to them. Take the bumper sticker off your car, stop handing out pamphlets, and stop trying to change or belittle others for not believing the same thing as you.' While I say 'Stop talking about it', I did intend it to obviously mean 'Stop announcing your beliefs in public'. I'm saying people should keep their personal beliefs personal, by only discussing them at appropriate times, and in appropriate forums.
So people can't hand out fliers? What's wrong with trying to find support for your cause? Yesterday a deaf man approached me and gave me a piece of paper asking for a donation. I did not donate and I didn't stop him from soliciting donations. Why? Because it doesn't affect me just as much as a religious bigot shouting nonsense, I let them do it because it is their right to express themselves.
The moment we take away that right, leads us one step closer to a totalitarian regime where only that which is PC can be spoken.
You are saying to stop about out beliefs on a site that's about people sharing their beliefs, with you sharing your beliefs? Interesting. I will talk about my beliefs with anyone who will listen. If not, I'll save it for someone who will.
I am Jewish people tried and still try to wipe us out I am here I am proud and while i don't force it one you. I am not going to give it all up!! am yisroel chai
I disagree. When someone's beliefs influences just about everything they think or do its hard not to talk about it. You in essence cut the person off from saying anything.
Tell me how atheism could possibly be a religion o great and powerful @jacquesvol Religion literally means "The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods." while atheism literally means "Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods."

Yeah... no.
That's not how it works. That's how you work. And if you freak out at anyone daring to mention their politics or religious beliefs, that's on you. There's plenty of tasteful ways to speak of such things.

I don't freak out, I'm explaining why people who talk about their religious beliefs are met with such hostility, and telling people how they can prevent that.
I think perhaps I didn't make myself entirely clear, because a few people have had the same misunderstanding. I'm not saying we should ban religious discussion. Only that people should stop announcing their beliefs in public forums. Having a discussion where both people consent and are interested is fine, but telling someone who didn't want your opinion that they're going to hell or that they're an idiot, is not ok. You get me?

I shall now cast a voodoo spell on you for mocking my true religion of Voodoo-Oprahism.
I actually snorted loudly at that. Funny.

Good take! More people need to read this.

Interesting. On a side note, Catholics ARE Christians. Actually they were Christians way before Protestantism.
And refer to a Catholic as a Christian, and you might just get stabbed by a sharpened cross.
That would be quite intolerant and ignorant, not to say completely against his own Catholic religion ^^

@Blobb That is interesting. I've seen so many people get offended when someone refers to Catholicism as Christianity.

@LuckyLittleLucy Atheism is a lack of a belief.
I thought Bill Maher explained that clearly.
No it's a belief that something doesn't exist. It's lack of belief in a religion yes, but the belief is thta there is no kind of higher power- still choice, still a belief.
I was going to say the same thing. Thank you!

I have the right to free speech and I will exercise it whether you like it or not.
If you don't like what I have to say than don't listen.
And I have a right to not be preached to about whatever personal belief you have. Your freedom of speech does not trump my right to not be harassed.
Harassed? Are you kidding me?

Stop being immoral and repent from your sins, and maybe you will stop getting butthurt
Sounds like you're the butthurt one. Stop judging people by an imaginary standards system.
I'll pray for you

It's not "pushing faith on people" unless guns and force are involved. Otherwise, it's just persuasion. Don't be silly.
And laws and defunding...
Every private institution should be defunded, so that's no problem.
Let's start with defunding the 'charter schools' then.
Atheism is not a religion.
That's evident
Bald is no hair color either.
@jacquesvol that's a bad analogy. It's more akin to saying bald is not a hair style.
Tell me how atheism could possibly be a religion o great and powerful @jacquesvol
Religion literally means "The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods." while atheism literally means "Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods."
Atheism is not a religion, how many more times will I have to say this?
well said. I hate it when religious people shove things down my throat,
if any sort of god or gods exist and there is 1 true religion, at the very least, 5 billion+ people are going to hell... think about that.
Yeah...
I find that people can easily talk about their religion or politics and get good results. You just have to do it in a proper manner.
It's same as anything else. You do it poorly, people get pissed. Do it with manners and tastefully, and people are receptive.
I think perhaps I didn't make myself entirely clear, because a few people have had the same misunderstanding.
I'm not saying we should ban religious discussion. Only that people should stop announcing their beliefs in public forums. I couldn't have worded this any better! Well said.
Thank you very much! I do think the world would a more peaceful place if we all kept our religious beliefs to ourselves.
