Valentine’s Day: The Day of Universal Love <3

Ever figured that Valentine's Day lost it's orginal meaning over time?

Each year on the 14th of February, many people participate in this annual tradition known as Valentine’s Day. We exchange cards, teddy bears, roses, and let’s not forget about the chocolate. We do this all because of St. Valentine, the Christian martyr and the man of love.

This day used to be very exciting to me. I would be so excited in my Kindergarten years. I We would make cards, and pass out lollipops and candy to each other because we wanted to show our friends how much we cared about each other.

I would race home because my parents always got me a special something each year, Whether it would be a stuffed animal or balloon, they always used this day to shower me with a little something to show that they loved me. Of course, I would be fine with a simple hug or kiss on the nose, but I was always grateful that they would put so much effort into making me happy.

As I grew older, and especially in middle school and onward, Valentine’s Day has morphed into something much different. It all of a sudden became all about your significant other, and what you could do for them to impress them. The cutesy love that I was used to morphed into all-around romance.

Ever hear the phrase sex sells? Well, it is true. Sex sells, and it sells big time. Hell, sex is it’s own multi-million dollar business, and those numbers skyrocket on the 14. People are out buying gifts for their loved ones, most of these loved ones being their significant others.

When did Valentine’s Day become all about significant others? Husband and wife? Boyfriend and girlfriend? is this what Valentine’s day has come to?

Well, yes. As we grow up, this day becomes more superficial, and becomes more about buying things your sweetheart, and less about well...love in general.

What is love?

Love has a lot of definitions. It can be from the fiery passion that you create in the bedroom, to the cutesy affection that you feel for your dog. Love varies in intensity, and we seem to have developed a prejudice for the one that is usually associated with the commercialization of Valentine’s Day.

Many people tend to define it as the first option, and this leads to many people feeling confused on the true meaning of Valentine’s Day. They only feel as if it’s a day for people to show off, or they think that you need a significant other to be allowed to celebrate Valentine’s Day. This is why so many single people despise or dread the holiday.

The thing is that… you don’t.

Love is well… universal, and it is not limited to the love that you feel towards your significant other. Love can be felt towards your parents, best friend, or even your dog. Love comes in all forms. We seem to only focus on one form on Valentine’s Day.

You do not need a partner to celebrate this time of year, you just need love. You can go out with your best friend. You can buy a heart-shaped cookie for your dog. You can buy a card for your parents. Use this time as an excuse to go all out on that person (or pet) that you love so dearly.

It is okay to not have a partner to share this season with. It is okay to be single. It is okay to celebrate this day when you are single. Love is not limited to your partner. It spreads across all of those special people in your life and throughout your life.

Just because you’re single, doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed to be happy that Valentine’s Day is coming up.

Just because you’re single, doesn’t mean that you have anybody to love.

Love is eternal. Love is universal. And love will soon find it's way to you.

I hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading. :)

P.S. I drew the last picture. I thought it was a good picture to share with all of you.
