times are changing. SI has a responsibility to make profits and clearly they've done this if for nothing else raising the positive image of the brand which will help it sell magazines overall. Many men would have sex with this graham woman i believe. maybe not as many as would a skinny girl but i don't think we can reasonably say she was only chosen because she's overweight
*raises hand*
I think it's safe to say she was chosen because they needed to pick an overweight woman category and because of that decision, they found the hottest overweight woman they could.
Definitely a money play tho. Don't blame them really
"As a man I felt the divine call of duty to take a stand for heterosexual men everywhere."
No one gives a shit about how you feel. That magazine is too sell swimsuits and is made to appeal to women.
SI swimsuit edition is definitely not designed to tell swimsuits. It's porn.
What would you think if society told girls that they're shallow and evil for not liking fat, hairy guys?
@AtillaTheFun "What would you think if society told girls that they're shallow and evil for not liking fat, hairy guys?"
That isn't even relevant to the topic.
It's very relevant to the topic. Guys who are saying that the model isn't attractive are getting bashed all over this thread.
@AtillaTheFun NO ONE is bashing the guys who say that she isn't attractive. Only the men who think that the cover should be all about their preferences. There are other covers featuring skinny girls too. Why doesn't he just write about them too?
This is a men's magazine. Women should have no say in what goes into it. Just as men don't have a say in what goes into women's magazines.
@AtillaTheFun Once again, irrelevant. What's your point? Only the magazine editors have a say in what goes into it. Not some dude off the internet who's not attracted to some of the models. And besides, this is just one man's opinion. There are plenty of men who disagree with him and feel that skinny girls shouldn't be in it. So based on your own logic, no women should be featured and the magazine shouldn't even exist.
relax, u will still get ur slim women in the spotlight celebrated. thats a non issue. why should that be the only kind celebrated? thats what i dont get. why do people care so much? its not like theyre saying it to care about ppls health. its pure bullying in my eyes.
because it's a magazine that celebrates athletes and fitness, not fatness... until now.
guess I can expect SI to start running articles on bowling and darts soon too. yay
@GuysGuy plenty of guys like those bodies though. even look at male responses on this question. go to a local mall or grocery store and see what kind of women guys are with too. guys are way too possessive about a womans body, its fucking weird.
I don't disagree with that point my friend. Like what you want. Doesn't bother me a single iota. I like athletic girls with tight asses and b-cup breasts. I have buds that like HUGE melons (the bigger and floppier the better) and could care less about anything else. I also have buds that like great big asses and give a rat's ass about gooey layers of cellulite even. And hey... whatever floats your boat.
So if a dude likes big girls, he can go buy a big girls magazine.
What I'm saying is that SI is a magazine that celebrates athletes (aka - fit people). Fat is not fit. Period. No matter how you dice it. End of story. Zero to do with what different people find hot or not though.
Now, you can easily argue that most of the bikini models in SI aren't fit either... sure. But they resemble a fit athlete a whole universe more than Ashley Graham does, that's for sure.
Not everything out there needs to be a fucking one-stop-shop mess of a general store for anybody with whatever taste.
@GuysGuy ok i see ur point about representing fit, and if thats what u are fighting for i understand it. But i also have to say... not sure if thats how the general public sees it including the dude who wrote this article. i would say most people just see SI swimsuit issue as purely hot women to grace their walls not as members of the fitness oriented community. there's a discrepancy. if it doesn't work... im sure SI will drop it. they just want profit. and profit comes from people liking it. but in the meanwhile, yeh, i guess for SI, wanting to celebrate fit ideals, carry on.
The most ironic thing about your major: you can dish it out, but you can't defend it. xD
(No comments to any of these people that joined your discussion... So not really a discussion at all.)
Would you like the honor of going through almost 150 responses? I am searching for an outlet that will let me address as many of these posters as possible.
To be honest I would rather see Ashley graham on the swimsuit cover rather than Marisa Miller. Marisa Miller looks super boney and unhealthy for that matter. Ashley graham has more meat on her body, and in my opinion more appealing. I guess to each his own. You find woman like Marisa a lot more attractive. I know guys who hate women that skinny. It's like being with a bag of bones.
But for the most part, I think Ashley looks great on the cover.
You're an asshole. I don't know if a thick women rejected you in your past or you're just crazy but either way, you need to get your eyes checked. She may be overweight due to her body fat percentage and the fact that she is extremely tall but Ashley Graham is a beautiful, admirable women. Take a look at this take once more and reflect on how petty you sound.
We're not hating on models. There seems to be some kind of effort to change what guys think is attractive. Showing us nude pictures of fat girls is not going to get us to like fat girls...
What would you think if society started telling you and other girls that you should like fat, hairy guys and that you're a shallow and bad person if you don't?
He's just saying it like it is. She shouldn't be on the SI cover... that's not attractive.
I kind of agree with you... It's promoting something that is unhealthy.
But they're doing that to get more people to buy their magazines - most of the population is overweight, so girls feel some kind of "approval" and self-confidence while curvier women attract guys from different social classes.
I'm confused what you mean by curvy.
It can mean several things. Thats why I saif curvER
Anybody that thinks Cosmo Magazine is feminist is an idiot.
And in what universe is that woman fat? The one where your getting angry about a silly little magazine is an important piece of news?
Well she's not fat in the American universe anyway. Well, not anymore. Visit any country in northern Europe. Hell, let's even add Romania, all of East India, every slavic country... shit let's do South and Central America too jut for the hell of it! I'll give you a whole hour to find ten women under sixty that are her size or larger... won't happen.
Don't think the view has been skewed just a little over the last generation? Try googling Rosanne Barr (TV show "Rosanne"). She was considered by most folks to be grossly overweight.
There aren't a lot of women who look like Ashley ghram either... so is also is unique and therefore should be celebrated. And believe it or not lots of men find her very attractive/ sexy. The magazine wouldn't put her on the front cover if they thought it would hurt their sales. Clearly Ashley does so well in the industry because companies get a positive response when she is used in their modeling. Everyone has their own preferences of what is attractive. So what if one issue doesn't appeal to you? It still appeals to a large enough market.
it's quite ironic that you're dissing one magazine cover and one body type because you've been so brainwashed into thinking that another body type on another magazine is totally okay.
we come in all shapes and sizes, and the fact that the media, fucked up as it is, is actually putting these women on covers, is a huge step for them.
Got to cater to the majority and Fat people are the 21st century majority now.
I too don't agree with normalizing fat people via presenting them as 'attractive models'. It isn't getting people in a situation to ever test/compromise their self-esteem and actively do something about it. This culture now tries to protect everyone's feelings... Growing a bunch of spineless 20-30 year old babies.
You realize, like just a 100 years ago, overweight women were considered sexy? And they were rare?
History brah.
@cheesesteak7 But now they're common, we're knowledgeable about health so society has changed in order to improve everyone's health and save everyone money. (y)
@cheesesteak7 That's because being overweight was a sign of wealth. If you had money to eat then you were most likely well off in the financial department.
Whoa, just because they featured Ashley Graham doesn't mean thin women are being forgotten or shamed. This is not the end, skinny women lovers. If you don't like it, wait till they release a cover with Marissa whatever. And in NO way is obesity being endorsed, know the difference. Ya all need to chill.
You are such a troll. Trust me this model is not fat. She is tiny with big boobs and a nice ass. I am a straight girl and I can say that. If you aren't just trolling then you need a good slap to the face. She shouldn't even be considered plus sized, she is a normal REALISTIC girl weight. Models that are usually portrayed are unhealthy as fuck and you are just being a douche because she isn't photoshopped to have unrealistic proportions. Good job and go fuck yourself :)
why the fuck do you pussies give a shit? is it hurting you? no, get over it. you shitheads are the worst. if you don't wanna see it, don't fucking look at it fgit. isn't that a novel idea?
Seriously! Like nobody is forcing you to buy the damn magazine! Smh.
@CHARismatic110 i don't get why people answer these in the 1st place. they're called trolls for a reason. they just wanna get a reaction out of you. I don't know why people spend paragraphs refuting this shit. he has yet to even respond to anyone who's commented on his take.
True. I couldn't let this one go tho. I have a huge #girlcrush on Ashley Graham lol. And the load of crap that he wrote just irked the hell outta me.
@CHARismatic110 eh, i'll pass. she's definitely pretty... just fat. i personally think none of the chicks should've 1. good lord there were so many hotter ones, but it's whatever.
Well she certainly doesn't fall under the things category, but I personally don't consider her fat. But to each his own. At least you didn't feel the need to go off the deep end about it.
I agree with you man they could've just left it alone if they didn't like it.
@CHARismatic110 oh, trust me, i'll make fat jokes to no end, but i only do it in fun. i just hate people who feel the need to go off on things that don't affect them or their way of life. anyways, these are the 3 chicks who should've won
kyra santoro
cdn-jpg.si.com/.../kyra1_0.jpg
megan williams

and ebonee davis

but that's just me...
All very pretty girls. I'd take this blonde haired girl and the black girl over Ronda and the other chic that won. Ashley stays tho 😉
@CHARismatic110 lol, i thought megan was the "ugliest" out of the 3... kyra is fucking gorgeous!
She's definitely very pretty, her pose is throwing me off tho. Her boobs are awesome tho!
@CHARismatic110 like, i have a killer top 5 girls list... she made me reevaluate things... i just looked at her instagram and oh my god...
Lol brb, going to Google her!

BRUH!!!
Lol ok fine. She definitely replaces the blonde chic!
Her photo's in sports illustrated are okay, but maily because they photoshopped away the cellulite. I don't think she's FAT, but she is more than curvy.. I don't think she's a great example for girls (but neither are models who are too slim). There are enough beautiful women out there who are somewhere in between. I think Aya Cash (the girl from You're the Worst) is beautiful, for example.
If that girl is fat then I'm FAT ALBERT HEY HEY HEY. She's beautiful. Who cares if she has curves or is " fat " she's hot. She's more beautiful than most girls and most guys would NE ER get a date with a girl that pretty her curves are sexy,
"Despite being an English major"
I'm still puzzling over what the hell that bit of information had to do with anything,
So women who weigh more shouldn't be celebrated? Just because a woman or man weighs more does not mean they are not beautiful. Ashley Graham is absolutely stunning. She is tall and big boned. She has different genetics. The average size for a woman in the US is a 12-14. Ashley is a 8. She is below average.
"Big boned" isn't a thing.
She's a size 16 which I believe is the US size, making her a size 12 in the UK.
@Hannah591 yes it is a thing. Ask a Doctor. And I looked up her measurements. Be supportive for her not against
Ashley Graham is actually a size 16. Kate Upton is a size 8, & I can't remember who that other girl was, but there was one featured that was a size 12. Anyway, Ashley is bigger than the average US size for women, but you are right, doesn't make her ugly.
@KBob93 average US dress size is 16, my love.
You're saying that recognition should be given to women who've worked hard for it. It's understandable. But you should also understand that women who are unable to lose weight naturally, go to extreme lengths to become skinny and 'attractive'. Which is unnecessary and extremely dangerous. This is a way of saying that it's ok to be differently shaped. It's to empower these women. It's not always that SI has a plus sized model. It's their first time, I think we can let it slide.
NOBODY is unable (as you put it) to lose weight naturally. Eating properly is most of it. And I say "properly" rather than "right" because what gets fed to us about eating "right" is a big pile of horseshit. Check the decline in general health since the FDA Food Pyramid got bought into. Fast track to fat and sick is all it is.
But nobody's talking about losing weight and whether she should or shouldn't. But unfit = unhealthy. And unhealthy is NEVER okay.
@GuysGuy you're right. But unhealthy is not ugly. There are people with hormonal issues who can't lose weight just by changing their weight and diet. Imagine, looking at skinny people all the time and you're too embarrassed to even work out in public. Maybe you're confident and you have enough will power to eat healthy all the time. Not everyone can feel that way. This is just to help them be more confident. Not to promote being fat.
My first question is: how is this question not closed given how long it's been out there? I'm not complaining, I just want to understand how "closing" questions works, here.
Secondly, as part of their target audience BEFORE they became all about "celebrating diverse body types" like a girl who likely weighs over 200lbs and another who could kick most people's asses, I agree that they've gone in a direction I don't care to follow. I was a fan of Marissa Miller, and uber hotties like her. Now if SI believes that their customer base is now very different from what it used to be and this appeals to them, then fine. But I certainly hope others will take up the gap in the market and cater to a client base who likes a particular feminine aesthetic. It kind of makes me think that the "lads mags" all packed it in just a bit too early as there's so clearly a need for them now!
