I guess I'm the weird person who doesn't necessarily believe a person should do this, but feel everyone has a right to be happy. If this makes him happy, then go on and do it. Who am I to judge?
People who feel a need to "change their sex" need therapy and counseling, not surgery.

I think, not that anything is wrong with transgendered individuals, that the rise of trans people is a push back against traditional gender roles, that boys should do a, b, c and girls should do x, y, z so when a person doesn't fit that mold, they change themselves, I think we as a society need to change the implied meanings of what it is to be male or female
Some say the meaning of life is being happy. So good for your brother he is happy after all. Lucky for him he lives in a part of the world where it's all accepted.

I'm transgender and I knew I was the wrong gender when I was really young before my father died (I was 4) my mother sais I was the happiest child till then but she could remember my father getting angry when ge saw me playing with girls or asking for barbies...

@GreedyGiver because you can always get another spouse, and another job. but once you a man takes female hormones his chances of prostate cancer increase dramatically. also bye bye bone density, increased risk of osteoporosis is just too damaging to ones health.
I can only imagine the horror of desiring to have a whole new body. And I thought wanting longer hair and better skin was something to stress about.

Crossdressing (gender-based behavior) does not necessitate the urge to 'transition' (official term) between sexes. And vice versa, actually. Humans are such complex creatures...
transexual is an old term. You cannot change you sex so they changed it to transgender.
I believe that is a reference specifically to the decision of the American Psychological Association in 2012 as they made the decision to just lump it all together (hence the term "transition" which never existed prior nor needed to) after declaring it no longer a mental illness. I think it was 2012...
Its a mental illness.. science recognizes it as such. But since the only way at that time they knew to treat it was allowing them to transition. I do know nueroscience has been working on a therapy for them that doesn't include transitioning. We know now the brain constantly changes , so this is a break through for science. It basically solidifies what so many have been saying for years, we control the brain not the other way around.

Neurosciences in general do not dictate what is and is not a mental illness. There are multiple reasons but one of the largest is that not all mental illnesses leave a neurological trace. Sometimes the neurological change is secondary such as a phobia which is acquired through traumatizing events. The phobia wasn't "latent" in the brain.
the problem with what your saying is nueroscience. ... is the brain being seen literally like never before. Modern technology is amazing and we see the brain down to every little piece. We see chambers that have never been seen before nuerotransmitters.. etc Ever heard or nueromarketing and advertisement. That is the future of media... its like todays media times a million. It will take everything they know about the brains of the sexes and incorporate into brains washing you essentially. It used to be psychology but neruscience is replacing it.
For now, let us say you're right, if but not to avoid a prolonged conversation that is further and further away from the original claim that transsexualism is not transgenderism. As the APA has changed the term to be all encompassing I shall simply agree that they are the same thing.

@AssJacket: There's a pretty thorough explanation on the wikipedia transgender and transsexual pages. Basically the usage of the terminology is kind of muddled at the moment, but mostly transsexual was commonly used as a term for transgender people who specifcally want to physically transition, but now there's some disagreement about whether to keep it or phase it out or what. @AssJacket I mean you can literally just Google the latest things neuroscientist has figures out, Transgenderism is a mental illness like many other things , it's closely related with anorexia and body dysphora ( those who get plastic surgery ) . Any mental illness can be cured. I guess for some it may sound dubious but for someone who took psychology it's sounds very doable.
