When you discuss with conspiracy theorists, vegans, people who prefer home remedies to treat their diseases, and activists for the protection of the environment ,you notice that all of them have something in common. They believe that pharmaceutical companies hide a cancer cure in order to protect their profits from other cancer drugs.
The conspiracy includes companies, researchers, doctors, politicians and rich people and is expressed like this:
"Do you know that the cure for cancer has been found long time ago? But the companies bought the scientist who found it to keep his mouth shut because they earn millions by prescribing drugs for patients who suffer from cancer!"
Nonsense. And here are the reasons:
1. The first basic mistake!
The cure for cancer. There never was and never will be THE cure for THE cancer simply because there are many different types of cancer and not just THE cancer.
The word cancer is used to describe a whole set of diseases that vary from one person to the other, strike different organs and must be treated in different ways.
People who prefer home remedies are used to give their patients just one type of herb for many diseases and they think the same think can be applied to cancer.
2. The scientist who found the cure is bought by the companies!
This is the best example of ignorance regarding this subject. They relate medical research with the classic caricature of the crazy scientist who spends all day in his basement lab, shouting "Eureka!" all the time.
The problem with this theory already begins with the medical research itself. It is missing its verification.
Let's say for that the conspiracy is true. One scientist found the cure for cancer. But how is he sure it cures the cancer? How is he sure it really works so that the companies can have a reason to buy him and hide the cure? There must be a series of tests with the cure being tested on patients. This process can last for months and even years and the patients are not required to stay in the hospital. They continue their lives normally.
Imagine you're one of these people. The cure works and the cancer is gone. Wouldn't you tell it to your family and friends? Wouldn't they tell it to their friends who will say it to their families? Wouldn't a local newspaper write about it? And speaking of friends and family, what about the scientists and those who pay to keep the cure a secret? They are just as susceptible to cancer and other diseases as anyone else and would ask for the cure.
But there is more. Even if the first test was 100% successful, the researchers have to send their results with the cure to other labs in other parts of the world for more tests. Which means that finding a cure includes thousands of people in many parts of the world. How can the companies and governments keep them all quiet? They find them one by one and buy them to keep the cure a secret? It just doesn't feel plausible. A conspiracy can only work when a handful of people are involved, for example the 9/11 attacks by Al Qaeda. Five, ten, twenty, fifty, maybe hundred but not more.
3. The companies make millions by prescribing drugs and that's why they keep the cure a secret!
Nope. First off, there are organisations and universities around the world that are engaged in researches and they don't profit from such things.
Also, there’s more than one for-profit company out there, which means competition.
If you assert that a cure would destroy a pharmaceutical company’s profits, then you are also asserting that finding a cure would be a good way for one particular company to beat down all the rest.
The company Pfizer profited almost 2 billion dollar in 2008 for selling Viagra! I say again, they earned 1,93 billion U.S dollar because they keep the dick hard like a pole! If they had a cancer cure they would earn enough money to buy a whole country! The company would become a legend! Their slogan for the next thousand years would have been "Pfizer - We cured the fucking cancer!"
4. Hiding the cure would cost more.
As I said, each doctor, researcher and scientist involved in any aspect would need to be paid an amount sufficient to overcome any temptation to squeal.
All of this comes after the billions spent on research and development to find the cure in the first place. Also needed would be a small army of henchmen capable of dispatching with those who will not cooperate, and with a budget sufficient to cover this all up.
This army would also be required to monitor independent and rival researchers, and would need to get to them before they stumbled onto the cure themselves, so as to either pay them off or kill them.
At that point, the price tag for having the privilege of holding the hidden cure would likely be in the trillions. To any corporation in this position, having a cure to hide would be a burden.
