I agree to an extent. A little while ago a white guy was harrassed by a black woman because he was wearing his hair in dreads. She said he was taking her culture... Wrong. Through out history EVERYONE has had them. Thing is everything and anything that is worn can be seen as fashionable. I think some should appreciate the fact that what they wear is being seen as cool or fashionable. Its a way of being excepted even if some dont see it that way. Wear what you want, curly hair, straight hair, no hair, dresses, a crown, a cape or whatever comes to mind. I am Native American as well as Irish, Scottish, French and English and I wear what I want and dont make a big deal if someone wears a head dress. I know some fashion designers and models get back lash for an ad or whatever and it drives me nuts. Non Christians and Non Catholics wear crosses and no one bats an eye at that.
Yeah I get you because you are mixed like me. I felt the same as you till I had to earn it in my travels. If you are talking bout that viral video of the kids arguing at school - its wrong to let one black girl who was misinformed undermine the importance of earning the right to wear another tribe's uniform. Wearing a cross in the West is acceptable because it is our culture. Western countries are Christian. I see Catholics hanging it off the dashboards of their ferraris all the time lol Black people are Christians too. I have never seen someone with non-christian roots wear a cross, even as a fashion statement. Correct me if I am wrong!
Fuck This! What so I can't dress a certain way or need to earn it because my skin is to pale? Fuck this! Your trying to tell me what I can and can't do because I'm Caucasian. What if I happen to like the way dreads look? I can't wear them because I was born the wrong colour, somthing I had no choice in. This is Racism and yes people can be racist towards white people. Stop dividing everyone up into little groups I don't tell black people not to get on aeroplanes because it's a product of white culture now do I?
Hi read the take. You didn't understand. I occasionally wear my hair in Gambian styles and im white because I love it. You can wear whatever you like but if you dont want people to get pissed - be appropriate! This is more about the damage it has caused in African American society
Every time I come across these "enlightened" black folks they're really just a bunch of racist asshats. I think your boyfriend probably brainwashed you. There are plenty of people who have internal struggles not just blacks. Black people have been some of the most racist and ignorant group of people I've ever come across.
@Relentless_Hippie omg yes!!! I 100% agree with you! They (black Americans) are also the biggest hypocrites. So good to see someone speak truth and their mind.
My partner isn't even aware of cultural appropriation as a thing. His behavior, thoughts and feelings sparked my observations and it already happened to be defined on the internet.
I am glad we are agree anyone can be rascist. But standing up for hundreds of years of injustice is not.
Cultural appropriation isn't a thing. People are free to express their culture and nobody is stopping them. Like seriously this is how this post sounds like "oh my fucking goodness! You straightened and shampooed your hair. What the actual fuck. You're not Caucasian you wanna be fucker" like seriously. Injustice? Did you know that whites especially the Irish where enslaved and treated way worse than any black American could comprehend. Where is their justice? Black Americans aren't the only ones that matter. There are other racist and I'm sick and tired of them playing victim. They need to notice there are other races. This whole "cultural appropriation" is a complete myth. Nobody is going to stop you on the street and say "what the hell are you wearing? It's this way or no other" like seriously? Sorry but this post pissed me off. Yes I agree! People can be racist and it's due to the fact of who taught them and where they were raised. Also peoples mentally are stuck in the past
So therefore they cannot stand or accept change and will proceed with racist arrogance and carry it to future generations. If people didn't have that mentally then this country would be way more amazing than it is now.
@ClassyMe Took all of the words right out of my mouth. Literally every person has been enslaved at some point. Black Americans are the only ones who can't move onward, and it's because they're raised to be racist. I've seen it so many times, they're irresponsible and blame the white man for their actions and their people's poor choices instead of acting like a normal human being. You don't see jewish people constantly harping about the holocaust, or the Asians complaining about how so many of them were arrested and held captive during pearl harbor. You don't hear white people complaining about the Roman days. Literally anybody could've been a slave and a slave owner and PLENTY of times have blacks owned slaves. Black Americans want to shun their true heritage, which is American culture and cling to this fantasy that they were all once kings and queens of some African country. Do they seriously believe those kings and queens didn't have slaves? Black slaves at that.
How can you compare one suffering to another to justify bigotry? Yes I am aware and its important we remember. The only reason why black enslavement is important today is because it was the last mass enslavement and people justified it by mocking them as sub-human. It wasn't political slave ownership where one becomes property after land invasion. Blacks were treated as humanoids and studied like animals. There are still slaves and sex workers trafficked all over the world so I am not trying to say only one form of oppression is important.
Your government never cared to look after the 'free man' and therefore few managed to flourish. I wish you understood how damaging slavery has been to the States and still affects families today. The psychological trauma was hereditary as no one tried to bandage the wounds. You should be giving credit to the African americans that overcame the oppression. Not insult those caught in the trap.
Black Americans today have absolutely nothing to do with slavery that happened in the past. I'm a person of color, I'm Puerto Rican and Jamaican. I live in America, I've never been affected by slavery. My boyfriend is black American he's never been affected by slavery. His family members are black American, they've never been affected by slavery. My friends are black American and their families are black American. Every black American I've ever come across has nothing to do with slavery. The problem is they're raised to be victims. They're raised to be racist. You're using the past as a means of justify bigotry that comes from black Americans.
Whites where treated worse than Black Americans could ever comprehend but you don't see them playing victim and acting like people owe them shit. If they hate my beautiful country America so much then they should move to New Zealand or something not even Africa. Don't like it? Leave it! It's honestly that simple. I'm sure you don't know the definition of bigotry. Slavery still affects whites especially the Irish. Let us give them scholarships, free shit, even free homes, gas, cars and stuff then just like the black Americans get but they suffered more than you so they should get more than you. Do you see how your logic sounds? Double standards much? What the fuck? Trauma? You probably were not even a sell when slavery was around. Stop being brainwashed by the media and outdated and fictional textbooks. If you haven't experienced it personally then you should be quiet and not speak about slavery. You're making black Americans seem superior to any other ethnicity which is in fact racism
Oppression? Bahahahahha! You don't know what oppression is. In the Middle East people are getting killed based on their religion not skin. Women are getting raped and then stoned. Women will be killed if they even show their nose or face. People are being hanged from tall buildings and people raping dead bodies. Black Americans don't know anything about oppression. The only reason blacks feel they're more important is because theirs was more recent. You're claret a heavily racist and biased black American. When you want to argue have actual facts to back it up and know what you're talking about. Let's take away their food stamps, government housing, child support, and any sort of government assistance and take them to the Middle East. I bet you they would shut up about their "oppression" and would probably work and not expect shit to be handed to them.
For the psychological trauma let black Americans say sorry to the whites especially the Irish. This stuff you wrote is complete bullshit. I know black Africans who aren't screaming the same shit as black Americans and blaming everything on whites. They're not enslaved! They also are educated, smart, and intellectual. They're all going to Ivy's or are president and founder of a company. Whites love them and have never been racist or treated them like shit. They are not affected by racism and some of them their ancestors never went through it but still sympathize with the whites (Irish) and black Americans. Racism doesn't exist to them. Black Americans but the bad reputation on themselves. Africans hate them and some people said they don't want black Americans coming to their continent. Black Americans complain and bitch about everything that doesn't go their way and expect free shit. They don't know shit about slavery and don't have anything to do with it.
They are raised to be racist and hateful. They are scientifically proven to be the most racist ethnicity which is in fact correct. All the black Americans I tried to get along with where racist shit holes. They called me and my family names, tried to kill us, fight me, and so on. I have come to an extent where I just don't talk to them or go in their neighborhood because we just don't get along. Let them stop having a narrow mind set and stop living the past then things would get better for them. Seriously let them try it out!
@ClassyMe I understand what you are saying. But my opinion is just that - an opinion. I can't speak for everyone because I am not everyone. I am translating what my eyes have seen and what my heart has felt as best as I can. I wish both of you could get that telling people to shut up because you and everyone you know is happy - doesn't work. Perhaps this is truly all in their heads but historically its still close enough to make an impact on this timeline. Look back and see for yourself. Jews are still getting court ruled justice TODAY for the holocaust in Germany.. perhaps America truly is the problem. You sure have a lot of people cuffed up for the land of the free. Try to truly listen in life and watch people just feel relief from having a voice. No comments on how they need to change their behavior or what they did wrong. Just listening. If its in there heads as you say then they will realize pretty fast!
@Relentless_Hippie Once again I agree with you 100%! It's so great to see a smart and educated person in this horrible world. Sadly this girl is a victim of brainwashing and her brain cannot comprehend such elements of knowledge and intelligence. Sadly they will never be able to progress or McKenzie forward with their stupid mind set and racism. Yeah! They play victim and expect everything to be handed to them. I have seen it way too many times. They are feel they are superior to everyone and nobody else matter. I was watching the news and one racism and biased member of the cult that is black lives matter got mad when somebody said "all lives matter" he then said "nah first black lives and then everyone else" which pissed me off. Yeah! The Jewish and Asians are chilling out getting degrees and are not letting the past take over them. Black Americans should learn from them. Do they even know that black Americans owned black slaves? They owned more than all of the whites.
@Relentless_Hippie I also agree with your recent comment. Honestly I have given up with speaking facts and logics to someone as brainwashed and brain damaged by racism as her. Fuck this shit! I'm going to drink some tea, watch tv, and chill out and not give a fuck. You should do the same. Stop giving this thing the attention it's looking for. We will get no where because they will bitch about everything we say.
I'm south Asian so concur. Many people are ignorant and "inexperienced" and they usually don't get the opportunity to see the world they live in from an alternate perspective.
There is also a lot of misconceptions and overlaps of cultural practices. Like dread locks, they're not strictly for black people despite what some say.
Yes I shouldn't have mentioned dreadlocks! It causes a riot haha I actively encourage sharing culture.. just wanted to point out ways to do it with class!
How about we dress whatever way we want.. I can understand the part where you should wear appropriate clothes if you're visiting a particular place.. but I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing whatever we want when we're in our own country.. and I seriously don't get why someone would NOT respect someone for doing so.. they're just clothes.. either feel good that they like your traditional clothing. Or just don't give a shit.. Let's see if your guy dyes his hair blonde or arranges a tea party with your parents just cuz you're white.. -___-
No one cares if you respect their fashion choices or how they do their hair. You've somehow convinced yourself that white people need your permission to dress how we choose, but good luck enforcing your own little rules on everyone. Your resentment of white people is your own problem, not ours.
What about Thailand, India, Italy, Sweden, Chile, Ireland, Peru, Portugal... Appropriation of their culture is alright? They never complain or demand for you to know all about their culture before wearing a poncho... or eating arroz de pato... Do you research everything about st. Patric before you decide to wear green?
Its ironic, isn't it? Demanding diversity and such and when diversity comes, they want segregation. Liberals have gone so farleft at this point that they gone full circle to start being extremely right-winged. Just that they are racist and sexist to whites / men
People don't get to be an everyday both part of mainstream society and entirely separate from it.
Example, I don't get how if a black girl likes wearing her hair straight sometimes, it's because white society is bad and brainwashed her. But if a white girl wants to wear cornrows, it's because white society is bad and she's appropriating.
do agree people need to be mindful of people's religious icons and rituals, of course. BUT...
When we all live together as one race of humans, we borrow ideas from each other. ESPECIALLY in America, the world's melting pot.
I like how another poster pointed out blue jeans. GREAT example of how an article of clothes has went from being miner's wear and a "white trash" staple at one time to being universal.
I can understand this. I always thought it was sort of dorky though when someone tried to pull a culture change, but not disrespectful. It depends on the individual's intention of why they wear certain clothes or appreciate certain art and we don't know enough to judge, even if they are well-travelled. If what they wear is not originated from religious practices,, I don't think it's that bad. I think using drugs recreationally, that were originally for spiritual experiences is disrespectful though, on another note.
Okay, then all black people should be barred from attending college or working in corporations, because doing so is an appropriation of white culture. Problem solved.
The British built schools in many different part of the world with many different ethnic groups for their colonies. Invading a land and building in it then forcing people to abandon their lifestyles is a whole other topic.
The first example of mass corporate trading was the Sugar trade. Something which began mass profit to a scale never seen before. Which happened in Jamaica and various other Caribbean locations. Guess which ethnic group was forced to work in the sugar fields?
At the time of abolition in the UK of slavery - Apart from the major plantation owners - Brits all over had a stake in the Caribbean Sugar industry. Families literally owned one or two slaves just to take a share of the profit. The British government was forced to pay the equivalent of 20 million in cash directly to the slave owners - which put so much money in the economy. Many of the elite 1% today had a share of that money. You wouldn't have the same corporate world today if it wasn't for this
@chintita Oh, absolutely. The manner in which a people organize their institutions is every bit a part of their culture. And educational institutions are actually curators of culture, so my point stands.
@mytake owner Slaves were worthless to the British and American economies. The real growth in the British economy was engendered by the Industrial Revolution, not some pittance paid to slave owners for their losses.
Slaves provided only marginal labor value and ultimately depressed economic development where they were widely used. It's no accident that the American South failed to develop industrially in the antebellum years, while the North's industry flourished. It's axiomatic that where labor is cheap (or free), economic development lags because there is no incentive to innovate new, more efficient means of production. That's also why China and India have lagged so badly in their economic development, despite those being two of the oldest and most structured societies on Earth.
Please don't correct me on something I have passionately studied.. The industrial revolution was sparked by the Sugar industry. Slave trade was already ABOLISHED in the UK so they had no choice but to set up schools and pay workers. Especially with tons of farmers out of work due to farming technology. Its obvious the population grew richer and the middle class was created after the industrial revolution. But the real wealth of the Elite belonged to plantation owners whos families still rank in the top percent. 24 hour shift work was invented to produce more sugar!
The States progressed economically in a completely different way. Something I know little about tbh!
My analysis stands, and it's backed up by the weight of scholarly thought.
Slavery provided little to the British economy in the end. Your contention is that reparations paid to British slaveholders for the loss of their chattel is what created the wealth of modern Britain. Entitlement payments from public coffers to private citizens do not create wealth, in that they do not augment GDP. What creates economic growth is innovation. The greatest innovation in 19th-century England was the Bessemer Process, which made England the world leader in steel production. *That* created wealth, both in the UK and the US, including the world's first billionaire, J. D. Rockefeller. Innovation adds to GDP by creating new products and markets that didn't previously exist.
I will wear whatever the fuck I want whenever the fuck I want and I will spit in the face in whoever the fuck has anything to say about it. Fuck this ridiculous entitlement that is "cultural appropriation" which seems to be a new way of saying "I am an intolerant prick and I believe that what me and my people wear belongs to us and you need my permission to wear pieces of cloth the same way my people do". That's what it is. Fuck people who uses those words. They deserve cancer.
Okay, if you want to stop all cultural appropriation, then black people need to be barred from reading, writing, and speaking the English language because that's an appropriation of the English culture by outsiders. Only those of English descent will henceforth be allowed to use the English language.
white people don't own reading and writing. many cultures across the globe did that. As far as English goes. I guess that would technically fit. Of course we were not given a choose of what language we wanted to speak etc
@cjmtherfcker Nope, in the paradigm of 'cultural appropriation,' those of English descent own the English language as a cultural property. That's how this silly game works.
@cjmtherfcker This whole game needs to stop. There are people who (amazingly) make a living from stirring this pot, but it's got to end. A white man wearing dreadlocks is no more a transgression against black people than a black man wearing a beret is an offense to white people.
I agree. I have rarely even seen anything like this that I found offensive. Typically when white people dress and behave in a more " black culture" they are cool. at least in my experience, I never found reason to take offense or be offended
Are people on this item really that fucking dense? I mean seriously. White people are so quick to tell someone to get over something. It's like people don't even want to understand. God fo
When the USA was a true melting pot, not what it has become, it assimilated incoming cultures. Italians, Irish, Cubans and other Hispanics. They brought their culture to the USA and it became elements of "our" culture. Even todays fusion with R&B and latino-style music by mainstream culture is healthy. The notion of cultural appropriation has its place. The Beatles embracement of hari krishna was absurd. But Michael McDonald's Motown work healthy assimilation.
Cultural appropriation is bullshit. Stop spreading racism, people like you are really doing what you can to separate the races and cultures. People are people, get over it.
So I don't really see the point off this. Who cares what clothes somebody wears? There are much more important issues to worry about, than what someone is wearing. I can't think of a time I have been offended by a white or latin or Asian person, dressing or talking like black people. Hell most of them are the ones who are actually cool open minded people
Although I agree on some parts I disagree on your view on other things. Do you really need to know the history of the Kimono in order to wear one without being disrespectful? No of course you don't. Just like you don't have to understand the oppression of the Celtic people in order to enjoy eating a Welsh Cake.
I like the English culture myself but even if I did choose to explore what others do so what, culture is not owned by a single person and lots of cultural traditions are made by those long gone. You don't own shit also culture is constantly changing and can be influenced from others stopping cultural appropriation is like having segregation saying you can't do this and this only this group can.

Respect, Fam!
Yeah because even if someone says dreads are for Rastas, there are non black Rastas too. Even Bob Marley was half white lol.
Vikings wore dredlocks...
You can be disrespectful no matter what.
Its literally not a black/white issue. The world is way too interesting and diverse.
I hope you actually read the take instead of assuming.
I did. I adressed the gist of it.
This is fucking America, you don't have to be Italian to eat pizza, Black to wear braids, or Latino to dance the tango.
It's a place where cultures intersect and overlap. This silly bean counting, PC bullshit gets real old.
Its not all about you mericans you know. I said 'West'.
I was talking about the way it applies to my country, where plenty of people bitch about this. Also, Katy Perry is American.
GREAT example of how an article of clothes has went from being miner's wear and a "white trash" staple at one time to being universal.
www.smithsonianmag.com/.../
The real meaning of your take, when reading comments too, is that people need to stop being assholes. I'll drink to that.
This is such crap. If we like something or if it works, we adopt it. Appropriate THIS, you cry-bully Commiecrats!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMYRYKvAEaYOkay, then all black people should be barred from attending college or working in corporations, because doing so is an appropriation of white culture. Problem solved.
so now businesses are culture too...
I thought I acknowledged that?
God fo
God forbid people actually READ. My grandpa would love some of these bigots in these comments. Good Take girl.
Hmm yep! Many already seem to have an opinion and can't be bothered to think from a different perspective.
Yes there is a healthy and an unhealthy approach. Its human nature I guess!
