Birthday, Social Media, and Friends.

Today is my birthday. And I tried an experiment. I removed the birthday notification from my facebook page. To see who my real friends are. And I know peoples lives are busy but when your real friends who know you well, know when your birthday is. Who wished me a happy birthday. No one. Coworkers yes, but anyone else. No.

Which brings me to MyTake. Why does social media need you to prompt someone to wish someone a happy birthday. Even those who share the same birthday as you on facebook know its your birthday as well but they forget to wish you.

We all have our busy lives. Granted we get married, have kids, etc. But 365 days of the year, like on Christmas, New Years, July 4th Etc, Your special day, Does a small phone call to wish someone cost anything?

Well, I have to say Facebook is my primary social interaction and I really wouldn't know my friends' birthdays unless Facebook reminded me. I used to write them on the calendar but I rarely use a physical calendar any more in the one in my phone is just a pain.

The exception, of course, is the handful of really good friends whose birthdays I have memorized anyway.

On the flip side, I do not advertise my birthday on Facebook. Whenever I sign up for a website, I do not put in my actual birthday so if someone steals my information they can't steal my identity.

Well, they can still steal my identity but at least the birthdate would be incorrect. So for safety reasons it's probably better not to.

What I've done for many years is have an afternoon tea party with my girlfriends around my birthday. I don't advertise it as a birthday party, I just say it's my Fall Tea. The people who know it's my birthday will bring a small gift.

However, everyone is so busy nowadays that I stopped even trying to have it because nobody can come anyway.

Because we rely on social media to tell us when peoples bdays are. We don''t make a conscious effort anymore, because we expect facebook to do it. Back in the day people kept up with birthdays in calendars/books/bibles (well at least my grandma does), people don't do that anymore. I don't even own a calendar.

Personally I only remember the birthdays of close friends, friends with whom I celebrated with them on their bday.

Like I know the bdays of my cousins who are my age or younger, because I was there with them celebrating every year. My older cousins not so much, I can narrow it down to the month.

But anyway I hop this experiment didn't ruin your day.

Happy belated birthday!! I actually only know my close friends birthdays, and a few others, but sometimes i need a prompt because I'm away with the fairies and all busy, heck sometimes i don't even know what day it is sometimes!
