Why are some black people scared of dogs?

My dog's an attention whore, she's also pretty good looking so she doesn't have a hard time soliciting a pet. Kids even sometimes run up and tug on her without her consent but she loves kids.

But it I've had a few black guys tell me, "that's one scary dog" as she goes for a pet. Don't get me wrong, if she goes for an unsolicited pet I give her the cue to 'be nice' which simply means 'mind your manners'. She isn't a spaz she just slowly trots with a happy face on leash at her next subject and will sniff them and wag her tail.

She's medium sized and happy go lucky with the exception of certain dogs. I don't know I just know she likes or tolerates most people but randomly loves some people. She really wanted a pet from a black guy the other day and it was like he wanted to but was so unused to this kind of attention from a dog he had second thoughts. I lingered and told him no she likes you but then he seemed to have second thoughts about her reaction to him talking to me thinking she'd be protective. My dog takes those cues from me. If I'm calm she's calm.

Im asking this because I can only assume it is based on experience. I've seen 'racist' dogs in the past. I adopted my dog after she was regimes many times. She was on the streets for a while. That said she is sensitive to people's energy more than anything.

If a dog looks scary, to you, to me, to anyone, it won't matter what color you are, you're gonna be scared.. That's why some people are scared of some dogs...

Besides, making a statement "that's a scary dog", does not imply that one is scared of "dogs" but merely saying that tHAT particular dog is scary to the person saying it. I find many dogs to be scary, does that mean I'm scared of dogs? No! It doesn't. Does that mean I'm black? No, it doesn't. I love dogs!! But hat doesn't mean I won't find some to be scary..

If a person is scared of dogs in general, it's more than likely that that person had a traumatic episode some time in their life and they relate it to that incident unconsciously, thus being scared of dogs in general.

If what they say about dogs only seeing black and white is true, a deeper skin tone probably looks strange to theme because of the lack of contrast. It is probably harder to see the facial features and the friendly expressions that people give animals.

Maybe that leads to some dogs acting agressive around them, which leads them to be afraid of dogs. And obviously it isn't ALL black people. I'm sure it's the same reaction a dog would have to sunglasses, a hat, or a mask.

Also, if the owner is white and doesn't socialize with anyone darker than them, the dog won't be used to it.

Dogs don't see the same color range as humans but they do see colors. Yellow-greenish colors are the brights and strongest they see. Mydog goes nuts when I buy her a new bright green blanket. She loves it so much.

The one thing I've consistently learned from having a rescue is that she forgets most of the social cues she once knew and looks to me in every new situation. Seriously.

But yeah I think you reached the heart of it, black men are used to dogs acting aggressively towards them. That's a fact.

It's reality and it's conditioned into dogs hopefully unintentionally. It isn't lack of exposure to people. If I tense up around anyone my dog looks at me if they try to touch me or pet her for my response.

But my dog was like 'pet me' and the guy was like 'awesome dog' but it didn't land. And I get it but I shouldn't be able to get it. like the dog &the guy walked away sad. And I get it... but it's the most compelling and innocent observation of why things need to change.

To be honest I have no idea. I'm mulatto and have noticed this in the black community as well and I couldn't tell you why this is the case.

I'm black and I'm not scared of dogs. When it comes to danger I treat a dog like a human. Attack me and we fight. Plain and simple. My homie has a pit. Very beautiful dog. Strong as fuck. Smart dog. I've never been scared of him.

@This_is_my_username Pits get a bad rep because of their potential. Yeah they have the potential of screwing up a bunch of stuff, but mentally they are no different than any other dog. Every dog has feelings. Every dog can get mad, sad, happy, etc. Pits are no exception. Then like you said because pits are so powerful there are some shitty owners who train Pits to be mean and attack. If you train them right they are no different than any other dog.

Same reason anyone else is scared of dogs. They simply realise that they can be dangerous and/or they may have had a bad experience with a dog. Some people are also afraid because their parents were afraid and they passed that fear down to their kids.

Racists breed racism. But no it isn't always as simple as that with dogs.

I've surely seen dogs that appear to be racist but may have other causes. I'm familiar with troublesome dogs.

So much so that I have actually had men be surprised when she comes up for a pet off leash. Like for a second they are like oops Adium dog off leash, then they realize she is a whore for attention, pets, belly and ears rubs.

I take her off leash on runs early in the mornings so when we finish Latino men are finishing their breakfast and off to work.

like the first time she made them nervous because she ran so fast. But then she just sniffed everyone.

My dog doesn't see color she just sees attention and potential food bonus.

My rule of the these days is that if my dog likes you- I like you. We volunteer at the homeless shelter. Women clean of drugs get free temp stay in our guest house and my dog likes people based on consistency.
