Why do black women wear wigs above their hair?

A lot of times this has to do with their hair being so dry and damaged from perming and straighten systems as well as dying their hair, they messed it up. Some hair textures were NOT meant to handle these things, and they do it because it looks COOL and because everybody else is doing it. Plus all of those chemicals tears out our hair and break it off. That is why natural is the best to go. Most 'black' or ethnic hair is course, coily and wavy. Which can get extremely dry without enough natural oils to keep it moist, and with the hair shaft damaged, it can't absorb sunlight to gain vitamin D and nutrients. Plus using products that have heavy chemicals likes sulfates [ alcohol which drys our hair. Not made for black/ethnic hair more so for people who are caucasian or have similar hair texture and make too much oils/oily hair], and anything with the word -paraben [a synthetic hormones also containing estrogen].

@YummyLady I don't wear wigs, but I know people who do. I use natural straightener, not the ethnic crap thats full of chemicals. My hair has been straighten since the 5th grade, and I not only wanted but had to get it done because I have multi texture hair from a heavily background. I have a mixture of everything. And I emphasize on the word EVERYTHING. Curly, straight, soft curls, side burns, etc. Ever since I switched up my products and eat a more better diet, my hair comes out healthier and less dry. Again, it depends on the product. I use Johnson and Johnson Gentle Treatment. Plus my hair is not like every other person's hair which is why some hair stylist can't deal with my hair because I have more then 3 textures.

It's personal preference, just like a lot of white girls wear extensions. My hair is long to my back, however, I like to change up my look, so I braid my hair up, cover it with a wig cap, and wear wigs.

Mostly becuz I don't want to bleach/fuck up my natural afro hair.

It's because we're use to hearing how bad and unkempt our natural hair looks, and how it's ugly or unprofessional so women either straighten, perm, or wear wigs over their hair.

Don't do that to yourselves. WHO says it's ugly? Beauty is not absolute. What's absolute is weather you are happy or not. Trying to be someone else won't only damage your hair, but your soul. Be happy. From experience, the best way of becoming happy is doing what you love, no matter how much you're affraid of it and the more society is against it, the braver you feel doing it. It takes time, good luck.

Shaving our hair isn't a thing. You BRAID your hair unless it's naturally short, put a wig cap on, and then you put on the wig.
