I'm watching a documentary about pregnant women in prison and one of them made this statement: "I hate the label society gives us. People think just because we committed a crime that we are automatically terrible, immoral people and that's not true. Many people who are in here just made a mistake, but they are not bad people."
So what's your opinion? Does being a criminal automatically make someone a bad person?
No. Sometimes, good people do bad things, and bad people do good things. Like this Jimmy Savile guy, he constantly did charity work, always always giving, and turned out to be one of the biggest paedophiles ever abusing probably hundreds of kids and using his name and status to do so. Then there are the stories you hear of prisoners saving prison guards, even putting themselves at risk to do so.
I think it's safe to say if they're a rapist, murderer or paedophile they're fucked up people, but other than that, sometimes good people do do bad things and vice versa.
No, I don't think so. Committing a crime doesn't make you a bad person and neither are all bad people criminals. Things might get out of control at times, some of those criminals might just be doing what they were taught, because they don't know any other way to live, some others might have an addiction. Also you need to consider that some countries have ridicolous laws. I'm pretty sure it's still illegal in Russia to tell a child that gay people exist, lol.
not a bad person per se; however, you did a bad thing and deserve the consequences.
depends on the motivation and severity of the crime as well. ie: a guy who stole a loaf of bread because his family is starving is not a bad person. but, if he raped or murdered someone to get that loaf of bread, then yes, he's a bad person.

Me personally? Not all are bad some are not even criminals. some gets stuck in wrong place and wrong time. some are stuck due to government wanted to clean some people and they were there. some are stuck due to poverty and sickness of family person. some are stuck cause they stood again corruption in Government. Some are stuck cause they knew secrets. And me i am wanted cause I killed 2 Secret service agents cause they wanted my father dead. Still wanted. Still I'm sure people don't think I'm a bad person at all.
Crime is defined by the law. So the question is, 'Are all laws good?' To which most people would say, no. Also, you can only be a 'bad person' in comparison to a 'good person'. So is a good person one who does not commit crime, one who has not been caught committing a crime, one who has not been convicted of a crime, or one who obeys the good laws and disregards the bad? Lots of questions here.
So to answer your original question, to some degree, we are all bad people. However certain crimes have more serious consequences.

The number of imprisoned Americans has tripled since the 1980's, one in 200 Americans are in prison, which is over 4 times the rate in the United Kingdom and nearly 10 times the rate in Germany.
In the states, a huge number are in for minor drug offences, as well. Over 80 million Americans have tried marijuana, including at least two former presidents, presumably most of them didn't get caught. Locking people up for that (which takes their right to vote away in some states) is nuts.
Let's say someone murdered in self-defense & was unable to prove that it was self-defense. Maybe a homeless person about to starve to death, receiving no donations, decided to steal something from a rich person who was significantly better off than him to begin with. Let's say someone was framed, or sent to jail via a lie. Always gotta know the full story to make a proper judgment call.
Being a bad person means going against the inherent morals that humans are born with. Meanwhile, being a criminal just means authorities believe you broke a strict set of imperfect rules formed by a group of imperfect human beings based off what is apparent--though, some laws are in line with inherent human morals (don't murder, mug people, etc). Some others can be pretty subjective/opinion-based. Take prostitution, for example. Using your inherent moral reasoning, there's no victim so it can't be bad, yet it's still being debated for some reason.
see we do get labeled. I committed petty crimes as a juvenile and all the people that found out I got locked up just fucked off because of simple mistakes made. just because we go through a rough patch in life and make mistakes doesn't mean we are not people. we all make mistakes some worse than others but just because some goes to jail and gets charged with armed robbery because they needed to feed their kid. doesn't make them a bad person
no you could of beat someone up in self deffence be charged with assault because you won the fight beat the shit out of someohe because they beat their wife up or raped a friend family member just because you do a bad thing dosent mean your a bad person
That's almost always a strong no.. see even in the case a couple years ago that made it to the news worldwide where a toddler was raped and the father shot the rapist on the spot, of course to protect his kid, then what? That father gets sent to jail for manslaughter :/ There are people who killed to protect and been jailed for it all over history, are they all bad for taking the initiative to protect what is dear to them? ;/ I know it's a weak argument but still a valid one :'<
It depends on their crimes and why they did it. A serial killer is not the same as someone who broke into a grocery store to steal food, for example. That's why the amount of time they spend in prison varies too.
A person who has been convicted of a crime is someone who made a bad choice. Someone who repeatedly makes bad choices that harm others, without having any remorse or attempting to change his (or her) behavior, is a bad person.

No, I always liked the quote "monsters aren't born they are created" and I think this applies to criminals because before you label someone as a bad person you should look at the reasons behind their actions.
exactly I got charged with armed robbery to feed my kid I never had it as a thought to kill a man however I knew they would be more persuaded to hand it over at gunpoint ik it sounds bad but I was my kid damnit I was 16 and no one helped me I haven't seen him since and would rather leave him to foster care knowing I'm not ready. will it be something I regret yes but we all make decisions we are not proud of
Of course not take al Capone for example everyone remembers him as a cruel gangster when in reality he was a great guy. He saved so many people during the great depression and helped the poor and was a great guy in general he just understood that no honest person can succeed in the rigged economy so he cheated but at the end he used his money for good and thats all that matters
I am just one step away from becoming a minor criminal. These days the governments love to ban perfectly normal and ordinary things, which in case if you violate the enforced laws then you are considered a (low-offense) criminal.
No they're aren't all bad people, I've personally met a few reformed criminals who got their lives together after being in prison and are genuinely good folks.
definition of bad and good is different for each and every individual. What seem bad to me doesn't necessarily be bad to other person. And No one has ever defines what bad and whats good. whatever court say is good we think its good or bad.
Well some criminals are kind hearted and good people in generals, they may commit crimes because they're in need, but that doesn't give them the right to steal.
Not the ones who are in prison for drugs or selling their bodies. People who use drugs and selling their bodies shouldn't go to prison at all.

Criminal means a person has broken one of the 430,000+ laws on the books. Some of those laws are ridiculous and deserve to be broken. Sometimes breaking a law is the only choice a good person has.
