I just watched, for the second time, a film titled: "Night Hunter" with Henry Cavill, Ben KIngsley, and Stanley Tucci that gave me second thoughts about the effectiveness of the Criminal Justice system and incarnation, as a means of "rehabilitating'' those sick bastards in our society.
If not familiar with the film, it deals with twin brothers one, in prison, for multiple kidnappings, torture, rape, and murder, while the other is out in society, continuing the onslaught at the clandestine direction of his sick imprisoned twin.
Ben Kinsey's character was eventually murdered by one of the brothers as he was attempting to find his own kidnapped female assistant. The film was truly a nightmare scenario, with these two bothers carrying out the most horrendous crimes you might imagine.
In the end, the head of the Homicide Division, Stanley Tucci, told Cavill's character,
"When you catch them, don't fuck around, kill them both" The two both drown/froze to death after falling through the ice in a small lake while police looked on
I was in agreement at one point.
In retrospect, I have to think that some law enforcement persons believe in "street justice", as a way to "clean things up"..... I, myself was beaten in the back seat of a police car with three other assholes looking straight ahead as if nothing were happening. I was 20 years old, and NEVER in any kind of trouble!
MY CRIME?- blowing my car horn in a drive in restaurant, and being a bit arrogant when told to leave. I pushed the serving tray back too hard.
As difficult as it is to imagine, we could have the police simply carrying out "street Justice' every day, and what would our society look like?

Absolutely not. Due process is one of the cornerstones of a democratic society, and no matter how terrible the crimes a person is accused of are, they're only accusations until proved in a court of law.
Many conservatives will tell you that "everyone McCarthy accused of being a Communist spy actually was!" but not only is there no real evidence for that, it doesn't matter- you could've had Joseph Stalin, wearing a fake mustache, working as the Secretary of State, and it STILL would've been disgustingly unConstitutional to punish him without arrest and trial.
Article 1, section 9, clause 3 clearly says "Get that 'bill of attainder' bullshit out of here; due process rules, outlawry drools" (though, admittedly, not in those exact words).
@NamerOfStars Thank you for your well though-out reply... Merry Christmas!
And to you as well!
So we need stable consistent justice system from top to bottom and bottom to top. Anything vigilante will be seen as an individual transaction. Eye for an eye tooth for a tooth until everyone is blind and toothless.
This is why the justice system uses peers to determine guilt. These are people co existing with the defense and look out for their own. As a jury it is a tough trigger to pull on someone but you are looking after your own.
With justice it is done and settled but a transaction is just continuing business.
@NaultD I sat as Foreman on a criminal case, here in California, and saw how the justice system is carried out, and the extent that Public Defenders will go to to free their client, when the evidence clearly show the SOB did what he was accused of. To top it off, when we brought back a GUILTY verdict this Son of a bitch, stood up in the courtroom as we were filing out of the jury box and shouted: "You fucking rich asses better watch your children" - The woman filing out with us was a "hold out" until the last minute and I think she wet her pants at that point... The judge had us back in his office to calm things down... The Public Defender wanted to talk to me to find WHY we brought back a guilty verdict? Can you imagine?
No. You either have an impartial justice system or you do not. You want to go down that slippery slope of special justice and sooner or later people will get executed for spitting on the sidewalk.
@DryGermanGuy... I do agree, but the incident I had with the police in my city, did bias my evaluation of law enforcement in general... I did graduate from the Orange Sheriffs Academy.
It would bias mine too, but cops don’t touch you here, unless you attack them. The very few asshole cops I have met were nitpicks from the traffic department demanding this or that repair on my car.
