Holy shit i was just thinking about this today!
I honestly had no idea that psychiatric service dogs existed (assumed any dog trained to assist with anxiety would simply be an emotional support animal) but i was thinking if my anxiety gets any worse and medication has adverse side effects, could i get an ESA for it. Nope. But i could get a PSD.
Would actually really help. My grandmas dog helps and she's not trained to do anything but be polite. Just a very clingy and loving dog.
But no, i hardly believe ESAs aren't considered Service dogs, if the dog is trained to perform a task to aid in a persons mental or physical health then it IS a service dog. It is literally providing a service.

Of course they are actually service dogs, it is ridiculous to think otherwise. Psychiatric disorders and illnesses are just as real as physical disabilities. I think there is just a stigma associated with mental health issues because you often can't actually "see" the disability, that doesn't mean those issues are unimportant or not real though. If a service animal is capable of helping someone with PTSD, anxiety, or any other mental disorder/disability, I'm all for it and those dogs should be considered the same as service animals that help people with physical disabilities.
If a person has sudden onset crisis symptoms, yes, of course a dog can be a genuine service animal.
General depression though? Mmmmm. Not unless it makes you psychotic.
Bottom line though, if a person tells you the dog is a service dog, it's a service dog. Not for any of us to judge.
Well, psychiatrist are prescribing service dogs for people
with mental illnesses. So i believe there is some truth to it.
My cousins doctor gave her a prescription to get service
dog to help her with anxiety, other emotional disorders.
Just because the disability or illness they help with is invisible, doesn't mean they are any less of a service dog. Mental health is just as important and can be just as debilitating as physical health

They are working dogs. They are trained to provide a service. They don't do what they do automatically, they are trained to do specific tasks. So they are providing a service. A service is the action of helping or doing work for someone. That's exactly what they are doing.
They 100% are service dogs. It has been medically proven that animals can calm and even prevent symptoms of certain disorders. I can speak for myself and at least 3 other people I know personally that get incredible benefits from them.
Yes they are service dogs, they are emotional support animals and require a license to have them registered. Theyโre really beneficial to people who need them.
Of course, they are service dogs. They do the job, and help their owners with what could be bad behaviors!
