I think it's something dumb is happening in USA which I hope it doesn't get to my country (but unfortunately it will, but without that impact cause my society is not that multicultural yet).
I have learned to braid my hair because it looks better and is more comfy than a regular ponytail or pigtails for me. I don't know if I do dutch, french or boxer braids. I don't care. I don't know what culture comes from the way I braid my hair. I don't care. I don't braid my hair because of a question of identity but to be comfortable.
The same way with cultural stuff, just not hairstyle, anything I'll do it's because it makes my life better somehow, so if something of another culture makes my life better I'll take it. If something of my culture can make your life better (can be useful or just make you have fun or being happy), I hope you take it and enjoy.
Where are you from?
Spain
That’s why Spain isn’t a melting pot of races like the US is but sometimes Americans of every race in the US are just pure garbage sometimes.
So you’re lucky, as soon as I get the chance I’ll move to somewhere where it is calm society wise
Not a problem: someone of another culture wearing clothing/hairstyles/singing/dancing/eating food from another's culture because they like it/appreciate it/think it's cool
Problem: that other culture claiming that they created it or that it is somehow fresh and new because they started doing/wearing/singing/dancing/eating it and/or that culture being racially/culturally insensitive about it or the culture/race they are disrespecting.
I think most people fall into the not a problem category, but there are those that can't see that they aren't in the not a problem category, that's a problem.
Simply retarded. First these kind of people are all for "diversity" and then "diversity" happens and it's wrong. Cognitive dissonance at play. Or simple insanity.
Either way, people and cultures have exchanged over centuries. They didn't adapt everything from a different culture, but they did adapt some things.
Additionally if we really go into this topic it would mean all non-whites would pretty much go back into the middle age. Not using jeans, computers, cars, etc. That would be fun, wouldn't it?
probably like 99% of the time it is fine. perhaps 1% of the time it is done in the wrong way, offensively or insensitively.
our world is built on cultural appropriation. i can't imagine that almost any person lives a life without adopting some characteristics of another culture into their lives

On hair in particular, a lot of black women define their beauty by their hair and for a while, they have been taught that their hair is ugly, unmanageable, and undesirable. So when people of other races take certain styles that were typically catered to black women, it’s sort of offensive. And then it’s like suddenly it’s okay and wonderful to have this hairstyle and all the pretty non blacks become trendsetters or “different” or trendy or “stylish”. And a lot of those people do not have ill intentions. But it still reinforces a racist and stereotypical opinion that black people are at the bottom of the barrel.
Moving on from that, cultural appropriation is just messy. And...
... it’s only because there are people who choose to disrespect the culture instead of just admiring it. Disrespect can come in different forms. It’s very subjective. But that’s why people should do a little more research before they just decide to do things because those groups of people could find something offensive if it isn’t done properly. Culture is apart of the heart. You can’t just stomp on it and think it’s ok
What about bkack women with blonde straight hair? People choose styles they like
I think thats a pretty broad generalization. What's wrong with someone from one culture admiring and adopting something from another?
Thats broad sweeping statments and simply not true. How is it possibly offensive to you, a woman can copy your hair if she wants and it shouldn't mean squat to you.
Youve jumped from "someone insulted black womens hair" to "copying black womens hair is offensive". How do you even make that leap?
How can hair possibly reinforce a notion that "black people are at the bottom of the barrel."
It does nothing of the sort. So some girl likes to wear her hair like that - so what? Your reading things that simply aren't there!
I understand fully - people today are way too sensitive, to the point that they get triggered over things that aren't really issues at all!
Not having a go at you, just think you need to calmly take a step back and ask yourself - is this really an issue? Is it actually offensive?
It’s just plain ol BS in most cases... I’m tired of it. As a black woman I can wear my hair straight, naturally kinky, dye it blonde, braid it, and no one cares. God forbid a whit woman get box braids tho🤦🏾♀️ it’s hypocritical half the time when people say it. Wear clothes and styles you like it’s simple.
Exactly. Thank you!
Every culture in the world is open to embraced and have always been imported/exported between individuals. The fact that europa have exported their culture the mostly is evolution. They had the power, resources and brain to win those battles and become the main culture. The intense fighting within europa had prepared them to fight and win. Look at the American war for independence. They had the brain, power and resources to fight off britain. Or the Spanish vs the inca. Or Chinese empire or the holy roman empire or the Napoleon wars or ww2.
I have worn my hair in braids like that since I was a little girl. I never thought about hairstyles belonging to a certain culture or race and so I never considered someone could be offended by my white self wearing braids. I think cultural appropriation is a catch phrase and trendy way for people to be even more offended than they already are. That said, I will mention that I think people who do things with the intent to look more like another race/ culture so that they can pretend to be that race or culture (like whoa vickie) then that's actual cultural appropriation and can be offensive to some. But most people don't really mind this type of thing except in cases like *whoa vicky * . Here's a link if you don't know who vicky is. is.. https://youtu. be/TAN9ahGEaI0
Never heard the term, but I'm inferring that it means to adopt aspects of another culture.
Well that's just normal & not necessarily bad or good. If a person is under pressure to assimilate, that can lead to resentment, but still is really just the history of people interacting & adjusting.
Examples that come to mind would be adopting local dress & speech (or a language itself), but the blending of cultures is often the result of communities coming together.
Look at he awesome bend of cultures in America.
I feel like people don’t understand why culture appropriation is a bad thing and let me break it down for you... Culture appropriation ISN’T a bad thing. The reason why we get to butt hurt about this is because your stealing the culture when you call it new and your own. Ex: Kardashian Braids, Boxer braids, mini buns.
I’m not gonna lie when someone of a lighter skin wears one of ours hairstyles they know what they’re called and are respectful but they’re seen as a fashion since like a way to be edgy for a few days. When we wear it’s kinda of like ghetto in a since.
This debate is American. It's been copy pasted into other countries at times, mainly in Europe, but that's just because a whole bunch of people lazily assume "I read about this on the internet, it has to apply where I live as well".
I think the whole subconscious reason for this debate (in the US) is that most americans, regardless of skin color, have actually very little culture and heritage to hold on to. There ancestry to wherever their family came from before migrating is almost completely forgotten and absolutely not practiced in daily life.
There isn't all that much shared, inherited and distinct culture for anyone there.
So people hold on to these small leftovers, feel like a haircut or a piece of clothing is incredibly vital to their identity and sense of belonging.
It depends on what it is. A hairstyle isn't quite as bad as stealing a traditional celebration. All cultures have things taken from each other, just like religion. For example, most Christian holidays are derived from pagan rituals, and most holidays of all cultures/religions are around the same time frame as those from others. It's a natural thing to happen. Different cultures also have a few similar dishes by different names and with only a few variations.
The way cultures grow and change is based on taking aspects of others and integrating it.
How about tea, I'm from England and everyone knows we drink a lot of tea, it's a very English thing to do. But tea originates from china so is that cultural appropriation?
Or similar to braids, dreadlocks. A style that has been worn by people all over the world so everyone has probably got ancestors who wore dreadlocks.
Even though I thought it was overly sensitive when I first heard of it. I could kind of understand how someone could be offended by someone dressing up as a stereotype. Now though I don't understand how someone having a certain hairstyle is taking away from anyone else's culture.
Don't care for it.
1. No culture is "pure", everyone influenced everyone. Especially in today's global world.
2. No person is "pure" either, so just because they look black/ white etc it doesn't mean they're all black/ white etc. How much % is required to partake in said culture?
Even if they have no percentage or significant percentage of said race, why should they be barred from experiencing that "culture"? No one owns it.
It's just too much silliness to even debate.
Heh 90s nobody blinked an eyelid over hair styles.. white girls wore them nobody cared, now it’s offensive to the offended by everything.
Ffs it’s hair it don’t belong to one race, if people want to go there it was Egyptians and the like who started the braiding, to stop the spread of headlice.
When you cherry pick the best parts of cultures and leave behind messed up stuff to make your culture the best and most pleasant/effective it can be because you care about people and want them to benefit from as much good as is out there. Including things like art, fashion, sports, business strategies, food etc. . .
I don't really care about it. Hell, I'm half mexican, I don't care if a white person wears a Sarape or anything like that. Shit like that doesn't really bother me. Hell, someone could wear a burrito costume and a sombrero with a Border Patrol badge and a red neck and a Trump pin and I wouldn't care. I'd be like "bro, that's fuckin' funny."
So many other things to worry about, which are actually serious. Yet we care so much about the way one does their hair. It is sad really, we as humans aren’t progressing much.
Don’t get it, why don’t people share what they know, honestly it’s stupid cause anyone could’ve come up with the stuff first before they did. I say the people that started calling it a problem are way too greedy 😕. Now what I don’t like is when movies and stuff use for example a white girl to represent a Native American girl and when magazines for example use things from other cultures not even close to how they actually are like.
I don't see how it's an issue, just like that retard who accused sony at E3 of cutlural appropriation when a white man played a japanese instrument in typical Feudal Japan attire... and got humiliated by a japanese mother who explained that that white man was a master of that instrument and respected in japan for it.
Or when people clashed Avril Lavigne for her Japanese themed music video except that japanese people liked it... Kind of a White Savior complex here?
The concept of culturalappropriation is only propagating seggregation. If multiculturalism is a good thing, why is it bad to adopt things of other cultures to yourself? Does not make any sense.
It's bull shit. The world is so intermingled and what now we are going to put copy rights on cultural fashion wear? LOL Sorry but these Social justice warriors and liberal hippies need to jump off a cliff because of some white girl braiding her hair in dredlocks and having a black woman scream "Cultural appropriation" "RAPE" RAPE!!!
I just don't see the point of getting up in arms about it. It's the natural progression of culture. You think every country in the world heavy metal at the same time? No, it was copied and passed around until it became a billion subgenres that nobody can agree on. Like, wtf even is nightcore?
For the most part, calling things "cultural appropriation" is silly.
The ONE time I get pissed off about it, though, as an Irishman, is when people go around calling themselves "Irish" during St. Patrick's Day. They go dressing as Leprechauns and drink copious amounts of alcohol. Bloody hell... you're NOT Irish, you know nothing of Celtic culture, you don't know about our struggle... you're just using St. Patrick's Day to get drunk.
Fuck yea I am. Irish blood within me drinks quite a bit
Cultural appropriation doesn't exist. Get over it. Cultural commercialization exists, like with the black and white pictures of kids starving, and Hawaiian culture though all true Hawaiians are dead by now, native Americans, it's a way of selling trends. People eat that shot up. Now should I be mad that black people are culturally appropriating Irish tradition of rap and claiming it is theirs?
Cultural appropriaton seems like a dumb concept to me, I mean, should you not be happy that people are interested in your culture and partake in it? It happens all the time, it's unnecessary to get upset about it
I'm a liberal and I'm telling you it's a bullshit liberal term. It's the kind of out-of-touch-with-reality ivory tower liberal thinking from the west coast that tries to categorize and assign moral value to basic human behavior. It's this kind of shit that pisses off enough regular people that they decide to elect an unqualified pussy grabber as President simply to avoid the qualified candidate who, unfortunately, wears the stench of the west coast idiocracy.
Wtf 🧐.
Aren’t liberals up for pro blackness though🙃
Since you claim you’re one

Liberals are up for people not getting fucked over by other people.
By fellow Americans of color (I am a honky) HAVE been fucked over - whether intentional or not. I am sad to report that I actually witnessed this in my life and that was a wake-up call. America is equal de jure, but not so de facto. Liberals wish America was equal de facto as well as de jure.
It gradually has been getting that way and will continue to do so thankfully, despite the long-term death throes from Pussygrabber's more evil minions.
Of course you call yourself a “honky” because you’re a liberal. I’m not surprised, libs hate white people even white liberals hate their skin color.
@foreveralone22
1. I am white.
2. I am a lot older than you; we said 'honkey" a lot in the 1970s.

It was not a big deal.
Honky is a derogatory term similar to cracker or the n-word for black people. So because people said that in the 70’s it’s okay? How about the n-word people said it a bunch in the 50’s and 60’s.
@foreveralone22
Oh God.
LOL...

I thank God I chose not to have kids who'd have to suffer existing among the current crop of idiot epsilons crawling on this planet.
I think it gets blown out of proportion at times because people get nitpicky but there are actual legit reasons why people get mad and I get it. The picture used is a good example. Black women wear styles and get called ghetto for it while I can wear those styles, name it something else and its suddenly fashionable asf. I can see why they get mad.
Thoughts? People are just too fucking sensitive these days.
I say unless people are making fun of another culture then do not worry about it. If we worried about this everyone's life would be extremely limited. We would be limited on the genre and sub genre of music we listen to, the ingredients we use for cooking, the clothes we wear, the games we play, the languages we speak, the things we use, the style of home we live in etc. Would you want to live in a world where our nationalities limited us personally? I would not want to.
It's a load of horse shit. People are allowed to emulate, imitate, mock, insult, or worship other cultures as they see fit. If people get offended, so fucking what? People get offended over everything. Those people breathing offends me. Are they going to stop? No, and no one else should stop enjoying other cultures in whatever manner they choose.
People need to realize that skin color ≠ culture.
There is no "black culture" or "white culture."
But the whole idea of cultural appropriation is still stupid. People can amd should wear and otherwise use whateber they want to.
With the hair thing i think it ok. Aside from that its not a good situation. Cultural appropriation is harmful when u get more plusses for using someone elses culture when the owners of the culture are either not recognised for it or shamed for it
Not a real thing. Just another excuse for people to get offended over something rather than actually try to fix their own flaws.
really stupid. for some reason it only counts when it is a white person doing it
It counts when a white bitch or anyone not of that culture us wearing a style being praised for it while the people who's culture it is a part of are being called ghetto and put down for it. If a half Italian half Mexican guy at my job can see what's wrong (he was also raised by his white mother) then other white people should be able to see the issue
Literally no one says shit to black people about box braids so quit your crying.
They don't want other races doing it either
@insomnium95 I have seen comments online of people praising one race but putting down blacks. It's not just about box braids either or black culture, it's other cultures white people love to claim and change also. You people need to stop being butt hurt because someone's calling you out on your shit
@nojokecarmichael if all of this continue to go in the same direction, white people will be the ones who everybody gonna discriminate
@nojokecarmichael Okay, hate and discriminate
@nojokecarmichael You’re not calling me out on shit. White people are not claiming another culture you’re just another ignorant racist.
@insomnium95 newsflash, I can't be racist. You're just pathetic like the rest that don't want to acknowledge the issue. How about you check out amandla Stenberg's YouTube Video ENTITLED "Don't Cash Crop My cornrows" It's Very infromative for whites and others alike
I don’t care about stupid braids. Just because a white person wears a certain hair style doesn’t mean they claim an entire culture. Yes you can be a racist, goes to show how ignorant you really are.
@insomnium95 you are so damn pathetic
Its not a problem at all. Copying clothing or hair or behavious from another culture simply isn't offensive - we are as a society far too sensitive these days, the left gets wound up over everything.
Im Asian - if some other culture started acting Asian, i really dont care! Its not offensive, and i dont own what they copy - nobody does
It's over-dramatized. If this was the case, anyone who wore anything "white" like blonde weave or any clothing that wasn't of your original heritage would be cultural appropriation.
@Jaded214 That doesn't mean they're claiming they invented it - it means they know it by multiple names. Chances are, they saw someone else online or in their lives call it something else. That doesn't mean they're screaming: "WHITE PEOPLE INVENTED ALL BRAIDS!"
Who knows who invented braids? Lots of cultures use braids. Vikings wore braids, it doesn't mean no one else can wear Viking-styled braids lest they hail from ancient Iceland.
True, but when it's SPECIFICALLY styles that are worn by black women, styles that black women are called ghetto for wearing, styles that black women and black little girls are sent home for wearing, and these same white women get praised for it and are also staying quiet while it's happening.
@Jaded214 So if that isn't okay, black women can't wear "white" hairstyles (like sleek pixie cuts) because white women were mocked for being dykes, right? If that's how it is then no one can do it without being racist.
I get where you all are coming from, but to me, hair isn't a problem. I would understand if someone took a traditional garb and began acting like fucking shithead in it, but braids? If we're so against anyone adopting styles in a multicultural country then everyone should strictly wear clothing and hairstyles that hail from their heritage, which only further aims to segregate and isolate us from each other.
OR... we can just fuckin' let people wear their hair how they want and stop victimizing ourselves.
I'm not against adopting styles. At all. I come from multiple cultures so that shit wouldn't work for me. I'm not saying it's not ok to wear the styles, wear wtf you want. I wear braids. But I also stand up for black girls when people are calling them ghetto and shit cod having the same braids. That's my point. Stop being so quick to call someone a victim and actually pay attention.
It's not ok for white people to wear zoot suits, have corn rows, claim to be Rastafarian? Who knew?
I think it is always a delicate issue because without meaning to you could be "pretending" to be a culture you aren't, and that is usually offensive.
Races and ethnicities copy white cultures all the time, I don't see bitching.
Like what?
@Highsxhoolstudent15 Language, clothes, inventions, electricity, musical instruments, cars, buildings, etc.
@reixun Africans did that to other Africans as well. That behavior isn't exclusive to Europeans. Europeans were just better at it.
@reixun Because modern day Africa is very civil, huh?
@reixun Still much more advanced than AIDS ridden, genocidal, famine suffering, civil war starting, impoverished shitholes that African nations tend to be.
How in the world do you have access to internet and still be this willfully ignorant. “shithole” voted for Drumpf huh? if you’re even from the US
Africa’s current state is directly a result of Europe and America’s meddling, poor European style infrastructure that was built then abandoned in post colonial Africa and last but not least, poor partitioning of land with no respect to legitimate cultural and religious boundaries.
-from an African, who actually has BEEN to Africa
@reixun Not only Africa has been colonized, in fact even European nations have been colonized. Why doesn't China have the same problems? That's right, because Africans need the help and guidance from Asian and European nations or they just exist in poverty.
“Help and guidance” that’s exactly what they SAY while pillaging and scamming our resouces.
Newsflash, china hasn’t been colonized by whites. Africa was great far before a white person set foot on it’s land, ever heard of mansa musa or the many great empires spanning the motherland? No because you probably only learned about white people your whole life.
@reixun China was greatly influenced, and invaded by many civilizations. They have been pillaged and scammed by many countries. These great African "kings" did the exact same thing you're bitching about now. African nations might be the most brutal.
Europe was filthy, drank beer because their water was so disease ridden until industrialization which is the only reason they were able to conquer anyone, not to mention they don’t wash their asses to this day
China Has never been succesfully colonized, sry you’re so uneducated and they are pillagers of resources themselves since their own country has too many damn people and terrible pollution, they pollute the rest of the world.
You said it yourself, Europeans are the ultimate pillagers and enslavers of the modern day. And what im saying the only reason other cultures are even a little bit similar to Europe is by FORCE not by CHOICE.
@reixun The Roman Empire wasn’t industrialized yet they were the most power empire in the world. Europeans were creating wonders long before industrialization. You obviously have no idea what you’re talking about and are going on an anti white rant. No one is stopping you from living the traditional African way of life in the bush so quit your crying about European colonialism.
@reixun You are a special kind of stupid if you think Europeans don't wash their ass LOL.
Japan and Mongolia conquered China, so yes they have. Most countries follow the European model because it's superior. That's why Asian countries, middle eastern countries, and south American countries follow their model, and European countries don't follow them.
I don’t need your prayers it’s the other way around. You’re another typical ignorant liberal who has hatred towards whites for no reason.
Sure you did
Goodnight idiot
@insomnium95 sweet dreams dumbass
Whateves. Everyone should just have sex and make out. I dont see why not lol
Retarded leftist conspiracy to demonize white people
I find it a stupid concept that only limits peoples freedom of expression. Stop with the group thinking and just be your individual selves.
Man its so ridiculous. I lady this week complained that Rihanna "culturally appropriated" eyebrows. I laughed so hard 😂
It doesn't exist. It's merely the derogatory PC term for for the sharing between cultures that has existed ever since humanity has existed.
It isn’t any different when black women wear weaves. I believe everyone should wear their hair how the like.
Almost everything under the sun has been borrowed from another culture. In time we just accept it as the norm and move onto the next thing we find offensive.
I think it’s stupid how everyone freaks out! It’s not a big deal and I hate the whole “you can’t wear that! You’re white!”
Like many people in Asian countries who "celebrate" Easter, Christmas and Halloween and get married in a church wearing a white dressing gown just for the pics?
Or the Christians who celebrate with pagan traditions on pagan "holidays"
@lexythelou22 except that pagan people themselves converted to Christianism, they took whatever symbols they already had and gave it a new meaning. They're not celebrating both while still remaining "pagan".
Same as many other European people ended up adopting or incorporating Roman traditions into their own. They changed into something new, it's part of their history.
Asia in general has very little to do with Christmas.
It's more like European or American people suddenly deciding to celebrate the Chinese New Year, but making it more like a circus.
I wasn't debating you, only adding another point. But I'd like to point out that it wasn't just willingly converting to Christianity. Way back when, paganism was considered a bad thing in many cultures. Many converted to save themselves the trouble. But what both of us together brought up shows that this has been around since way before it recently became a popular topic of argument.
@lexythelou22 I understand that about pagan people.
What I'm trying to say is that many times people just adopt something from other cultures completely randomly and without considering the meaning of what they're doing. Christmas for me is a religious celebration - despite its origins - and I think it shouldn't be imported like a shirt or haircut because it looks fun.
Santa also doesn't have anything to do with tradition, but oh well.
@Tron5678 the Asian people I'm talking about are not Christian...
I guess Japanese people shouldn’t wear our jeans. They should just continue wearing kimonos in everyday life. Jokes aside, cultures borrow and exchange ideas. It can be a beautiful thing. Why should we ruin that?
I don’t think it’s bad unless it is for example abusing an important religious symbol or something like that. Just have respect for those things and ur good
Racist anti-white dogma from the Church of Intersectionality.
I think you should show some degree of respect. Don't mock the culture.
It's stupid. Most the knowledge those people who get upset by it make is actually wrong. Like the origins of hairstyles. One of the stupidest dumbest fuck things I've ever heard.
It's dumb,(at least in America) because we have every culture and they all mix don't make something exclusive just because of possibly might offend a culture
Couldn't care less about it. Do and wear whatever you bloody want.
I thought that imitation was the highest form of flattery.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
WTF! If it weren't for cultural appropriation I'd still be in German Lederhosen, lol.
As long as it isn't a religious or ceremonial thing it is fine
It's dumb. You don't need to be of that culture to enjoy doing what that culture does.
its wrong. people need to respect other cultures and not play dress up
LOL 😂 SJW ALERT
Anything is racist and homophobic y’all are retarded
You mean like liberals who think that they are rebelling against the government structure or traditional structure whatever you deem bad and then try to make it seem like you are so cool and woke
You already have rights unless you live in a 3rd world country gosh western women are the most privileged. Yawn.
I don't see it as a problem: our cuisine is 50% cultural appropriation.
Nothing serious that people fucking wine and complain
I like it but then my culture invented most of the stuff society needs to function so I have a lot to gain from enforcing restrictions on people based on culture.
Trendy leftie commie crap. Damn snowflakes want deporting to the USSR...
Simples...
