Its racism when they look specifically for someone that is a POC. What I mean by that is when you advertise a job or position and say that you only want someone who isn't white, which is what they did.. they didn't offer the job to a white woman. They excluded white people in their casting decisions...
Because of that if I want to see the show it will not be on Netflix, it will be when I pirate it.
I should add, If they had left the position open to all, and then the best one was a POC, i would be ok with it.. We do not need forced diversity. We need success based on merit.
Yes. If it had been any other race cast as white, there would be even more people complaining about "white washing" and racism. And it's of blatant disrespect to Eastern Europeans, which is what the Witcher is about. Eastern Eros always get lumped in with western Euros for absolutely no reason. They're extremely different culturally, but no, people only give a shit about their skin color. The guilt of western Europeans always gets pushed on eastern Europeans for no reason.
It's a very foolish move on the producers part and blatant pandering. The studio already stated that they were going to stay as close to the source material as possible, so much so that geralt won't have a beard. But then they turn around and are now going to replace Ciri who is clearly described as white with a non-white actor. It doesn't make sense and is insulting to fans
Based on the definition of racism I don't think it is racist. It also isn't racist either way, but it is a bad idea to do it. You should be selecting characters that match what they are supposed to be.
How about they make the entire cast black while they're at it and film the thing in Africa? ... The entire game has a Polish scenery, from flowers to trees, the way buildings look, you can clearly see it is Poland back in the day. And back in the day there were no black, latina, Asian girls in Poland. It is nice that they want to make the thing more multicultural so it applies to more people but to me it is a profanation.
I don't mind if its not that important to the story like the remake of rocky horror for television. Wasn't great, the original is so much better. I have NO problem with another race taking frank's part, but if you are doing docu-drama stuff, you absolutely have to do it according to the sourse material. There weren't any black norsemen, that's not racist, just a fact. Honestly its kinda racist they wanna replace it with a non correct casting. Not of the fans. Sure it would make it a more wide spread, but don't force new rules and ideals on shows that have a decent fan base. If the show doesn't work, change it. If it does, THEN DONT!!!
It’s not racist either way. If that particualr actor fits the role they should play it. Skin color doesn’t matter, but the reason they choose specific actors is mostly due to that actors publicity, so they can generate more publicity for the movie/show. it’s just marketing.
I don’t know that that’s accurate. For characters based from a preexisting work they’re frequently chosen to match the existing lore. Harry Potter would be a good example. Black haired, British, Short, etc.
If we were to recast King TChalla as a white man instead of a black man (black panther) I’m quite certain people would be up in arms.
In this case however it’s even more evident that skin tone is a factor. They specifically stated that they wanted non-white actresses to audition, not white ones.
I still think it’s just to generate publicity. If this little “scandal” gets more people to watch the show it was a success for them. I’m pretty sure they don’t have racist motives (which would require some kind of belief of superiority of one race over another), especially if half of the camera team and possibly even the producers or directors are white.
If that’s the case they’re stupid because this forced diversity keeps killing the industry.
I don’t quite know. I for example would think it rather tasteless to cast a white man as the black panther as that’s not who the character is. It doesn’t make sense to do so.
Black panther is based on the whole ethnic concept though, whereas this game/book is most likely not. It’s also not as well known as Harry Potter which is why I think your comparisons don’t really apply. For a matter of fact I think the vast majority of show and movie characters could be played by an actor of any race without ruining that movie or show.
The story is based on polish mythology and many polish people are happy to have their own story. Much like how many black people took a lot of pride in the representation of African culture in the Black Panther movie.
The Polish people I’ve heard y’all about this are quite upset that their stories are being appropriated.
I just think Americans should stay the fuck away from the witcher series, before any more of that "social justice" leaks into it, and suddenly it's an all black cast.
it is hyprocrisy people consider it cool to be racist against white people Asian or black polish women seriously they dont have respect for polish culture i hope that they take a white girl but lets see i won't watch that show if she is not white
It's not racist to make a character who isn't defined by their race another race. White should not be the default state of all characters until someone graciously decides "okay I guess you guys can have a character that's not white"
All the lefties and cucks will say "the character is not defined by their race!" but they would throw a fit if black panther was written to be white in a comic or movie or tv show!
I just think its stupid to intentionally go around switching races in art because you personally believe that's what the race of the person should be. Might not be racist, just not what I would do.
I would never be like 'okay we're looking for specifically a chinese man for this role' if I had the option of just not giving a fuck about race and choosing based on talent and how an actor can carry out the lines.
Yeah, upset from the fact that the TV show producers were deliberately searching for a non-white actress for Ciri.
What I meant was, Polish people wouldn't care about if it was reversed. Public outcry about them strictly casting white actors, which is the right choice.
I don’t understand your point. Polish people wouldn’t be upset if polish looking people were being put into their stories? Yeah... that kinda makes sense.
What I mean is, Polish people wouldn't care about the public accusations of racism and oppression, IF they'd only cast white actors. Not the fact, that the actors would be white, just oversensitive people's opinions about it.
In comparison, Poland didn't care about EU's "sanctions" and public calls for "racism" when they refused to take in masses of refugees.
It looked awesome. Witcher is also a book series and I think they have several comics. The fan interest in the show was really high until this most recent issue
I did not read the novel so I would not know how good it is. I just played Witcher 3 and I really liked it, but I can't imagine a TV Show about it. Not alone with inaccucurate characters and not fitting actors/attress
I don’t think it’s a big deal, but I think it’s a very cheap way to represent people of colour. Instead of just changing a white character at the last minute, make a thoughtfully designed and developed black character with their own story.
I just want them to bring the story to life on film. I'm reminded of the Netflix Death Note that I couldn't finish watching because they completely altered the core of the characters' personalities and motivations. I don't really care about the race as much, but the story should be told as accurately as possible. I think race can be a factor but it depends on the story.
It does pain me to see the hypocrisy though. It seems white-washing is the only thing SJWs see as a sin.
That's really disappointing. I don't know why people feel the need to deviate from the source material. I love the books, and the games they made from them are ok, but I won't be watching the series if they sjw it up like that.
If they choose an actor or actress just because they are or aren't a certain race then it's racism. But if they try to cast Geralt as a 20 something black man there is going to be backlash for inaccuracy to the beloved games
People are going to refer to the game version because of the easy visual rather than reading a book description mixed with an individual's imagination.
Frankly for a tv show, i dont think it matters that much. Unless you show a character in a prevoious episode as one person and in the next change them completely, breaking immersion, it shouldn't be that important to the story.
Being inaccurate for the sake of race is racism. If the entire Witcher universe was populated with black characters, it would be just as wrong to make them white. Stick to the actual story.

No, it's not nice at all.
@Sixgun77 I did call it a profanation.

Don’t tell the pollocks that their heritage doesn’t matter 😂
I don’t get the reference
The story is based on polish mythology and many polish people are happy to have their own story. Much like how many black people took a lot of pride in the representation of African culture in the Black Panther movie.
The Polish people I’ve heard y’all about this are quite upset that their stories are being appropriated.
*talk not y’all
Autocorrect
I just think Americans should stay the fuck away from the witcher series, before any more of that "social justice" leaks into it, and suddenly it's an all black cast.
Because they're feeling "liberal"
Ehhh my initial response was to be pissed off that you were talking crap about America, but then my second response was to be depressed cuz it’s true.
Although, nothing is official yet, the series might be good, but I'm not getting my hopes up either way.
My hopes were up, now they’ve been dashes
it is hyprocrisy people consider it cool to be racist against white people Asian or black polish women seriously they dont have respect for polish culture i hope that they take a white girl but lets see i won't watch that show if she is not white

Not all characters, just the ones in the actual books.
Is anyone’s character defined by their race?
You're going to piss the racist snowflakes off with that bit of truth
@JustWorthlessMe my bit of truth or hers?
It's blackfacing and it's racist.

Yes, that's blackwashing.
Are the developers of the game in on it? That is the real question.
The author of the books was asked and he said he’s “ok with it” but imagine what would happen if he said he wasn’t ok with it.
The author is Polish, right?
I doubt the Polish care about public outcry.
Either way, it's a shame this modern world...
The polish I've heard from are pretty upset
Yeah, upset from the fact that the TV show producers were deliberately searching for a non-white actress for Ciri.
What I meant was, Polish people wouldn't care about if it was reversed. Public outcry about them strictly casting white actors, which is the right choice.
I don’t understand your point. Polish people wouldn’t be upset if polish looking people were being put into their stories? Yeah... that kinda makes sense.
Pardon my bad explaining skills.

Not the fact, that the actors would be white, just oversensitive people's opinions about it.
In comparison, Poland didn't care about EU's "sanctions" and public calls for "racism" when they refused to take in masses of refugees.
Yeah...
Why do you make a TV Show out of a Video Games Serie? It will never work out
It looked awesome. Witcher is also a book series and I think they have several comics. The fan interest in the show was really high until this most recent issue
Why not movies to tell some of the stories?
Shows are better than movies. GoT would be my prime example.
It originated as a novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Witcher the game came after.
This right here is what I was going to say, but you beat me to it.
I just want them to bring the story to life on film. So if I were to make a Black Panther tv show I could cast King TChalla as a white man? 😂
Someone give me grant money and I’ll get to it
I mean, i guess you're right that that kinda heavily breaks immersion & cannon, but besides that i stand by my opinion
Hey man, more power to you. Most fans of a particular story want their characters to be properly represented.
For example the travesty of what happened to Luke Skywalker in TLJ. May he Rest In Peace.
Recquiescat en pace
Being inaccurate for the sake of race is racism. If the entire Witcher universe was populated with black characters, it would be just as wrong to make them white. Stick to the actual story.
