Dates to ancient times. Maybe because health is generally associated with beauty, while ill health often is reflected in appearance.

There is an old TV movie I saw late night once about beautiful but poisonous alien flowers that arrive on earth, and an ugly monster that comes and tries to warn people about them, unsuccessfully.
