To me, civility demands giving people initial respect, but egalitarianism & pragmatism conduct from the observed henceforth will add/subtract from that.
I think you deserve politeness and the bare minimum amount of respect when you are a complete stranger. From there, nothing should obligate you to keep that respect if the person turns out to be a bad person.
I always open trust and respect people and their own views. Especially when I completely disagree, but I will debate or discuss too. I do this until they give me a reason not to. Like lie to me or rude things to me.
I think Respect is unearned and earned Like you start out with giving q person basic respect and your opinion and respect of them goes up or down depending on whether or not they deserve it
Respect must be there because we are all persons for whom Jesus Christ died. That is the dignity of being a human being. A person that does not give this respect need no respect neither.
i strongly believe that everyone deserved to be be respected not because they did something or earn it. simply because they exist and we need to value that.
Basic respect yes, as in being civilized and cordial. But respect beyond that is earned and not freely given, and basic respect can also be revoked if given cause.
A bit of both, you should always be polite to strangers but if they're rude, self entitled, condescending or anything then they don't deserve any respect

Respect has to be earned , this is why you have to prove yourself worthy on tough military promotion courses , you must lead by example.
I will respect anyone who doesn't throw it back in my face. We're all on our own journey through life and it's not my job to judge you.
Exactly how you said it. Basic civility. Dont be an ass. But respect is earned.
It is earned easily at the start but if lossed it is harder to earn
Respect (as in social human decency) should be automatically given... then revoked when necessary.
Too many people demand respect but don’t want to be a leader in this regard.
No wonder society is fucked up.

It's a two way street. Many people demand but don't give.
It is earned. People say respect elders. Just because you’re old doesn’t mean you deserve respect. There are racist old people I don’t respect.

I mean, you shouldn't be a dick to people but respect has to be earned.

You earn respect, otherwise it would be pretty meaningless.

What value does existence in and of itself have?
intrinsic
And if a person disagrees with that stance?

No. Respect has to be earned otherwise it has no value.

I believe we should treat one another with a sense of decorum, but many people treat others terribly especially in service industries.
Basic respect, yes. Every human being should be treated fairly and decently, unless they do something tl lose even that respect.
