It's kind of a silly question. Each likely to answer according to the perception of their own biases. If the reader/viewer/listener shares the media's biases, then the answer is likely to be no. If otherwise, then yes.

Yet, keep some perspective here. The media at the time the Founders laid out the First Amendment were almost all partisan news sheets. The very idea of an unbiased media would have been laughable.

Moreover, the term "yellow journalism" came out of the 19th century. Indeed, it was media reaction to the sinking of USS Maine that pushed a very reluctant President McKinley to ask Congress for a declaration of war against Spain. Indeed, speaking of "fake media," it was later discovered that the sinking was probably an accident and not a Spanish attack.

The notion of an unbiased media really only came about as an accident of technology. Television had three - four if you count PBS - networks. Radio had two national news networks - CBS and NPR. There were three newsmagazines - Time, Newsweek, U. S. News & World Report. Newspapers were always locally focused and it was only due to their location that The Washington Post, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal gained national prominence. (Later USA Today did create a national identity.)

Because of the limited outlets, in order to get the broadest possible audience, the news business had to attempt a high degree of balance. Moreover, during much of this period there was a stronger sense of social cohesion, which tended to reinforce the tendency toward balance.

However, beginning in the 80s with talk radio, cable and the first cost effective lap top computers, it became possible to target a specific audience. Throw in the proliferation of outlets and social media and audience segmentation took off. Then, as night follows day, a more biased journalism followed. It was as much effect as cause.

Indeed, ironically, it was Fox News - under Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes - who first saw the potential for audience segmentation and who really began the tilt in media coverage. In this MSNBC and CNN merely were echoes - reaching the audience that Fox opted to forego. (Foregoing it because, especially in the 80s and 90s, the conservative audience was much larger than its liberal counterpart.)

Put another way, a biased media has been the historical norm. The trick is to be aware of your media and - most importantly - to be discerning about facts and aware of one's own biases. That, however, as George Washington said long ago, in the obligation of any good citizen.

What is more worrisome is the sloppiness and slipshod nature of journalism. In part it is fair to say that bias plays a part - when you see the President getting 90% critical coverage, it is fair to say it is not just about the facts. It is doubtful Hitler got 90% unfavorable coverage. (Yes, that was a joke.)

However, allowing for that, the pressure to get out ahead of a story - particularly in an age when every citizen with a phone is able to be a journalist, albeit an untrained journalist - is causing the media to get the story wrong and is reinforcing a mob mentality.

In a populist age when established institutions are under attack and when the public is apt to judge its own actions as higher than the law and social peace, that is highly dangerous. See also the high school kids from Covington, Kentucky, who were effectively subject to a mob all because of a smile and an edited and unexamined video.

This was, perhaps, the most odious episode. Adults, who should know better, reacted to visual stimulus, making no attempt to use reason to suspend judgment and get the facts, processing everything through the prism of their own bias and emotions. This was the response of animals, not civilized human beings.

The public gets a media it demands even if consciously so. Not for nothing did George Washington argue that the survival of the republic would depend upon the character of its' citizens. Such character being notably absent in this enlightened age.

The problem is so many people lack the intelligence to think for themselves and the knowledge to construct actual opinions of their own. Ex. Trump and his idiotic fake news exclamation. I think everybody knows damn well if somebody does something that's against the law that he does not like he will sue them. And what so many people fail to see is that mainstream print and news media Outlets cannot speak or print anything that is knowingly false. Now they may Give opinions oh, sure. But if they provide anything that is not factual they are required to retract/update the statement. This is governed by not just the FCC, but others. See the FCC is a federal agency. And if the media were actually providing all this information to the general public about Trump that was false, or as he calls it fake. He would have the ability do not only sue them, and we know he would because he would be an absolute winner if they were saying fake things about him that were not true. But he would be able to probably pull strings and make it very difficult for such a news Outlet, same as I said that the FCC is a federal agency. But the problem is there are too many people in this world that has so little knowledge, so little intelligence, and just lack the ability think reasonably and outside the box. The inability to question things and see something more Broad and what they're being told right now seems to be what America is all about.

I stay with my elderly dad so he’s just watching FoxNews, that’s all the mainstream news I can currently speak on. But no, I don’t find much of what they say there to be an accurate depiction of what I see in the world every day, and there’s a lot of sensationalism and fear mongering. And their nighttime op-ed show hosts have generally shitty attitudes towards life cloaked in phony pseudo-decency. Any news that operates like a TV show and relies on us tuning in to hear current events slanted to our personal attitudes so we’ll stick around and watch 100 MyPillow ads per day, I just don’t trust it. Accuracy is not the goal of these channels, it’s about saying what either liberals or conservatives want to hear so they’ll say “Yeah! Fuckin’ A!”, and won’t change the station.

Well, the media has a ton of power and influence in today’s society. I’m not sure if calling them the “enemy of the people” is necessarily true. I think they have a ton of responsibility in wording things appropriately, showcasing facts, demonstrating where they have gaps in knowledge, being unbiased, etc. I don’t think we’re seeing this today in the majority of the media available to us. Most people aren’t going to do extensive research on the issues at hand, so they will rely on various media platforms to receive their information. Now, the information they receive can be riddled with half-truths, lies, bias, unfairness, etc. People are getting a bite-sized, biased, and out-of-context piece of information on something from a news outlet that they consider aligns with their beliefs and/or political affiliation. Overtime, this can cause extreme divisiveness, tribalism, dogmatism, etc. The media seems to be everywhere and influence almost everything.

I agree with some of what you're saying. A free press is important for disseminating information to the people. An informed populous is important in a democracy for obvious reasons. When the press accomplishes this, they are a friend to the people; a tool in ensuring that end of an informed populous is met. However, there are cases when the press is inimical to this goal, such as when they spread misinformation - fake news. Not all media organizations are created equal; some help to inform the populous, and others propagate lies to support a narrative, which does the opposite. CNN is one such organization that is guilty of spreading said lies. Because they serve to misinform their viewers, they are the enemy of the people.

I'll have to see the video but to be clear, to agree with your assertion, I'm looking for a pattern of behavior (lies, as in more than one) that shows an intentional desire to lie or mislead by the network in support of a specific agenda. I am hoping you've got more instances to share that are clearly representative of CNN's actions as a network than one thing said by a reporter in the middle of a riot who's being assaulted and even then saying the protests behind him are illegal may be based on what the police have told him at that moment.

I'll watch the clip and approach this with an open mind but again, I don't think any reasonable person would draw a generalized conclusion about an entire network lying to support an agenda based on the comment of one field reporter who's being assaulted in the middle of a riot. If, on the other hand, you can point to instances where sitting calmly in the studio Tapper, Blitzer, Anderson, Lemon, Cuomo etc. have looked right into the camera and intentionally lied to support an Anti-Trump agenda or whatever agenda you believe they're trying to advance, now we're talking!

First of all, stop letting yourself be told what to think by the Daily Wire. It is a far right leaning website with a questionable reputation for accuracy and honesty. You're never going to get an objective view of CNN or any other news outlet from Ben Shapiro, ever.

Second, Miguel Marquez was one of 3 reporters CNN had reporting from Minneapolis during the first few days of the protests there. His comment wasn't referring to the Minneapolis protests as a whole as the Daily Wire would have you believe, he was referring to that specific group of individuals at that point in time and what he saw was a caravan of people marching peacefully to another location. That's what he reported.. And yeah two people then lobbed shit in his general direction. Big deal. The two exceptions of people who saw TV cameras and decided to do some stupid shit doesn't negate the overall observation of how the vast majority of people were behaving. And if you've ever been imbedded in a situation like this, you would know protests can go from entirely peaceful to violent in a nannosecond. It doesn't mean someone is trying to present a false narrative when that change occurs after they made their initial observation.

If this clip is to prove CNN is trying to create a false narrative of the protests being peaceful as you imply, then they clearly would have gone to a tape delay of showing things like this so they could cut the video before anyone threw anything. Going live allows whatever happens to happen and to be seen by everyone without them being able to edit it or control the narrative. Clearly not what a biased network would do if they were lazer focused on you not seeing things like this and creating a false narrative.

CNN, if your assertion was true would also not have shown on live TV; buildings set on fire and being burned to the ground in Minneapolis, police cars being set on fire in Los Angeles, looters breaking windows and running in and out of stores on 5th Avenue in New York, showed full coverage of and condemned those setting fire to a Wendy's in Atlanta right after the Rayshard Brooks shooting in June and showed attacks and violence against their own headquarters in Atlanta during the original George Floyd riots in May. I could go on with examples, but you get the idea. If CNN was trying to push a narrative that the protests were peaceful, their coverage on live TV of all the violence and damage caused by rioters literally as it was happening would be an extremely strange way to go about it.

In short, the only people who would conclude CNN had a bias of driving a narrative that the protests were entirely peaceful were people who clearly had not actually watched CNN's coverage of the protests and went in with hatred towards them that a highly biased website with an agenda like Daily Wire was only too happy to validate with a meaningless clip so people who already hate CNN can go "see, see, there it is, there's the proof."

Unlike most of the Trump supporters on here, you seem capable of writing a coherent sentence so I guess I was expecting more from you than this as "proof". I even clearly spelled out my expectations twice, as to what a reasonable person would be looking for in order to objectively label a news organization as biased and trying to push a specific agenda. This isn't it. If you've got more evidence that confirms your belief, I remain open to seeing it but this 2 minute clip really proves the opposite of your assertion, that CNN was more than willing to show people throwing things at this guy on live TV which a network pushing a narrative of entirely peaceful protests would simply have never allowed to be seen.
