I'm pretty sure that circumcision was always about minimizing sexual pleasure. In the case of female circumcision, it was about eliminating sexual pleasure.
So, it's possible that filthy, nomadic, desert-dwelling, goat herders started male circumcision it to prevent infection. I have no idea who invented female circumcision or why. It makes no sense to cut out the external portion of a woman's clitoris. What a horrific and sadistic thing to do.

In the later part of the 1800's various medical "experts" began recommending both male and female circumcision to prevent and/or cure various medical maladies. One of the purposes of male circumcision was to discourage masturbation.

So if one of the goals of male circumcision was reduce the desire to masturbate, it means that removal of the foreskin reduces sensitivity (and pleasure). There are supposedly many, many nerve endings in the foreskin. I wouldn't know because I was circumcised at birth because it was the thing to do at the the time. Doctors recommended it.

Circumcised men can still enjoy sex, however. But can you imagine how much sexual pleasure a woman without a clit would experience?
