The quote usually goes as "The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter." Not sure where you got religion from.
In a way it is true, you are limited to the lowest common denominator in a democracy and that can indeed stand in the way of progress. People voting against their own interests are not uncommon and they rarely understand what is important for themselves or their country. No government form beats a monarchy/dictatorship if the people in power are great men but it is the time between those great men where Democracy shines. Democracies usually does not have a single failure point and can function well even under the worst conditions. The strain of corruption and incompetence that countries like USA is suffering under would have utterly destroyed any other system, that is the true power of Democracy.
Democracy it's the wrist possible form of government, except for all the others.
