Let me prefice this by saying I'm fully ready to accept that I might be an asshole for this decision, but I wanted a second opinion on this.
The past 5 years have put a real burden on my mental state. I've seen and associated myself with both sides after a certain election, one side I was met with hostility and vitriol for daring to have a difference of opinion, on the other absolute hypocrisy and double standards when it doesn't fit their view of the world ( ill let you decide which is which)
It kept devolving from there with more and more resentment festering over the years and me feeling the effects from both since I dare to believe that neither is 100% right.
This all came to a head a few days ago when I was talking to an old friend (now exfriend) regarding certain topics and... lets just say she got hostile to the point that I feared for my safety. If people want more details they can pm me but basically it boiled down to the use of terminology and semantics that I've never really cared for.
People in my inner circle ranged from NTA to you could have handled that better while talking to the group in question it basically boiled down to "YTA, you're a horrible person, you're lucky she ONLY got hostile with you and figure out why you're a terrible person yourself"
Honestly if it wasn't for me already knowing people from that demographic who were more sympathetic to my stance, I likely would have broke and went full bigot just because of how wronged I felt.
Thats when I realized that my issue isn't with any specific set of people, its anybody who is overly invested in politics regardless of which side they take.
So come this new years I've made the choice to completely avoid and remove such people from my life, I've dealt with so much anger and hatred and I'm tired of it all and I want nothing to do with it anymore.
If that makes me an asshole, so be it.
