I'm very glad you cleared your political stance up for us. If you were brought up in a foreign country but, in order to become a citizen of this country, it's imperative that you are able to communicate with those who will be affording you that citizenship. That said, no one should ever be told they cannot use their native tongue to communicate with others from their native land. Your commentary is from a young person that has heard this from others. "Learn to speak 'Murikkkin!" It's one of the most racist and bigoted things one can say to someone. I will assume you were born in this country, and possibly find it difficult to hear someone speak Mexican near you.

I think that all languages should be allowed, but government business should be done in the government language. (Though court interpreters are okay.)

No... there is nothing wrong with local languages.
Do you know language is what makes an ethnicity?
What about the case of mexico? We have more than one official language. Most of us speak Spanish but there are many recognized indigenous languages.
Or you are saying that to maintain unity there should only be one?
Again, what to do in our case? Should the indigenoue communities abandon their languages (languages native to mexico unlike Spanish actually)?
Or should the rest of us speak the language of a tribe we are not a part of or originate from?

Many languages die by lack of use, and a deep part of our culture is lost. In America for instance, many Native American languages are spoken, but many are disappearing. It is one of those Native American languages that gave us the code talkers of WWII, enabling us to pass information that the enemy could not break. Extremely important! Many customs and religious beliefs are tied into language.
There is no reason to prevent groups from using their preferred language amongst themselves. However, when dealing with others, the “official” language should be used. If I was conducting business with a private or government entity, it would be rude for them to speak together in a language I cannot understand. And in many government departments it is illegal.
And it is racist of you to say that people should not be able to use the language they understand when talking just among themselves.

Up until the 40s welsh children heard speaking welsh in wales were caned and forced to wear a sign made of wood or lead around their neck with WN on (welsh not) in an attempt to stamp out the language and replace it with English. I don't think we should be trying to stamp out languages. Just let them evolve as they always have done.

Whether it’s someone who is an immigrant/tourist or someone who speaks the indigenous languages, I think a person should know enough of the official language to have a basic conversation, especially since it’d be on things like street signs and gov’t documents.


With that being said, I also don’t support forcing everyone to speak the official language and chastising them for speaking their native languages.

My ancestors came from Sicily. They spoke broken English to get by. Their children had to speak English out side the house and Italian at by. They survived.

The city I grew up in had numerous ethnic neighborhoods. It was common to hear people speak their ethnic language around their area. But they spoke English to get by in society.

Variety in language is part of culture, i don't think it would be right to force people to stop speaking languages simply so foreigners can better understand when they visit or for any other reason.

Any and every citizen should be allowed to speak any language they see fit. It is understandable for a general language that everyone speaks in dealing with official business but anyone should be able to speak any language.

Also, America has no "official" language.
