Not sure about the death toll numbers, but everything else is correct. As for the "Great Party Switch", it never happened, only 36 people switched if I recall correctly. Don't believe me, check the public record, it's all there. I also recommend watching Hillary's America, it covers the great switch in detail at on point during the movie. The ideals have never switched. You know it was the southern Democrats that not only launched the attack that started the Civil War, but the remnants of the Confederacy that started the KKK who mentor Democrat high ups? Also, slavery has various forms and definitions, which makes abolishing it legally takes time and effort, America is very young compared to the rest of the world's nations, some of whom still practice slavery and oppress people. Just to clarify, a first world country refers to being post industrial revolution, not being progressive (which lead to a lot problems in the teens, 20s, and 30s). Read Eric Foner's Give Me Liberty! series, it'll show you the truth, I believe volume 2 specifically covers the early 1900s to about the Cold War if I recall. If the switch happened and the ideals changed, then how come conservatives, Republicans, and the right always fight for the right's of people and for the freedom to be oneself and the liberals, Democrats, and the left keep placing more and more restrictions on people? Also, the Civil happened not over slavery, but the economic impact it would have on the South. The backbone of the Southern economy was slave plantations, mostly cotton. In the mid 1700s, the cotton gin was invented and gave reason to not have slaves as a work force anymore, and hire actual employees. Shortly before the start of the Civil War, the McCarthy cotton gin was invented, which could process both long and short form cotton, effectively killing the South's economy and reason for having slave plantations. The Democrats, formed by Andrew Jackson, was formed for the sole purpose of expanding slavery in the West. The South seceded out of fear Lincoln would abolish slavery and leave them bankrupt. It has always been about the money for the Democrats. Learn your history.

The Republican Party in its history is the American Progressive Party. At least it was until Reagan. But I start with some history. Gop derives from the merger of other parties such as the Whig Party denoted by a very strong Anti-Jacksonianism (an ancestor of populism), the Liberty Party and the Free Soil Party the latter were strongly anti-slavers. Their vision was progressive in the round, based on a mix of social, scientific progressivism and economic liberalism weighted towards maintaining competition. The Sherman antitrust act was republican, as was the orientation to the free market and the reduction of protectionist barriers, the republican party emerged as a party of industry and workers. The first senators and deputies of blacks and Latin Americans were Republicans.
With the 1929 crisis the party split in two. On the one hand there are the orthodox republicans or progressives on the other hand there are the conservative republicans or the agrarians. Progressives led by Dewey remained predominant in the Northeast, while agrarians led by Taft were predominant in the Midwest. The progressives brought in former General Eisenhower as their new leader and won the elections, he was not a great politician and Nixon his deputy was the one who de facto controlled his politics. After the ignominious collapse of Nixon, Gerald Ford was the last president of the old progressive Republicans.
With the arrival of Ronald Reagan, progressive Republicans are annihilated. The Reagan brought out the ex-agrarian part of the party. The Republican party during the Reagan era was stormed by the Christian Protestant sects who drove the true Republicans out of the party. The swan song of the traditional Republican party was the Bush Sr. presidency who had to patch up Reagan's party with other people's money with his crazy spending. With the defeat by Clinton's side there was an internal revolution where the conservative and neo-Jacksonian fringe, then the exact opposite of the original Republican party, took over. This led the party to great successes such as the election of Bush Jr. and subsequently of Donald Trump, however only the name remains of the Republican.

It's what the parties represent today that matters, and today the Democrats are the party of hate and oppression by way of keeping disadvantaged groups in their places to ensure Democrats remain in power. Only a fool would blame slavery on a political party. LOL The simple truth is - if you were a plantation owner in the South, or a large land owner, you were pro-slavery, no matter what political association you had, IF any!! Slavery was an economic choice for some, while others, like Andrew Stephens who was a Whig, considered it a God given right.

While the Whigs and Dems shared many views, their differences were glaring enough. Although the abolitionist movement spawned the Republican party in name, they have long abandoned the view that "all men are created equal", unless you're wealthy.
