No because they don't judge people by race (They aren't racist). They look at what he did, which was overdose on drugs after committing crimes. Why would we feel sympathy for that? That is his own mistake after making poor life choices.

If he had been genuinely innocent and was killed by the actual chokehold we would have had sympathy, and if he was white in the same situation we'd have no sympathy either.

In their minds, he was black, he used drugs, and he had a criminal record. It was all the justification they needed to claim his murder was justified... and yes, it was a murder. You can bet they would have acted differently had a BLM protester or illegal immigrant kneeled on the neck of a white person and caused his death. They’d be calling for the death penalty.

If they kneel on the neck of an innocent person that is murder if they die from that, if they kneel on the neck of a criminal who died of an overdose then obviously its not murder. Incorrect handling at most. The chokehold itself is debatable, but i haven't seen evidence the chokehold was what killed him.

Question: If he was dying of an overdose, why would they need to pin him down? Why didn't they take him to the hospital?

When my friend had a bad trip on LSD, the cops had to come hold him down until they got him a benzo. He is a cancer survivor, and this was during our drug phases too, so we were always fucked up.

Moreover. He was not a "criminal" yet. There was a single allegation that they did not even really investigate. If the police's response to a single shoplifting incident is to choke someone out, healthy or not, wtf are we doing?

Defund the police. Not abolish the police- but move that funding into things that make a difference, like community social works. Give those people a reason to do things and the opportunity to create a community by injecting funding into those areas, instead of injecting funding into corporations and tax cuts for the rich

@sofiec Keep in mind i am from a country where we currently have a lot of corrupt police and police brutality going on. And its targeted against people like me. Here they are bashing on people's head just to send a message, lock up girls in cells and then enter the cell making sexual remarks and making the victim feel insanely unsafe. Yet, i do NOT wish to defund our police. I want to have their management replaced with something that can throw every bad cop out when they overstep.

So we have to judge fairly here, was this police brutality? Or was this common practise. This kind of hold is clearly common practise, and like i said you can debate if it should be. However, if an officer is not aware someone is overdosing and it would normally be a safe move to do this was not murder, its negligence at most.

Should he have been fired from his job? Possibly. Should the position be banned? If its as unsafe as people suggest absolutely. But murder? No, thats way to far.
