What is something in your country that sounds delightful but actually isn't?

Over here if you commit a crime in certain communities such as raping or stealing, the members of that community tries to catch you and then they give you a necklace 🙂

One of my fondest memories of the Husteca Potosina, the Huastec region of Mexico, is savoring the famous zacahuil, the region’s signature dish. Zacahuil is a giant Mexican tamale. It differs from regular sized tamales in that it is richer in texture and color thanks to the dried chili pods sauce, marinated meat and one of a kind flavor that you won’t find anywhere else; unless you are baking in an adobe oven such as the ones used by traditional Southwest Pueblos.

In Mexico, zacahuil is referred to as the “the Tamale of Tamales” or the “Party Tamale” because it is the biggest tamale dish ever prepared. It is usually reserved to feed big social gatherings and parties. The size of the average zacahuil measures at least one 1 meter long (3 feet), some zacahuiles can measure up to 5 meters long depending on the size of the social gathering. The average zacahuil can feed from 50 to 150 people. Given this information it is obvious why the Huastecs named this dish zacahuil which comes from the Maya (Huastec or Téenek) language meaning bocado grande, Spanish for big bite.

A peculiarity of this Huastecan dish has a slightly wild and dark origin. In pre-Hispanic times, when Emperor Moctezuma ruled Tenochtitlán in 1468, he sent a butler to collect tributes from the area of “La Huasteca”. This man named Quimichtlin, walked long distances and taking advantage of his position of power, abused the women he met on his way. When the Mexicas were defeated, the Huastecos took revenge and captured Quimichtlin, who was murdered. They wrapped him in a shredded and enchilada dough to be taken to a hole, covered with stones and cooked. When the zacahuil was ready, they cut it up and distributed it among the women who had been abused, because in this way they were doing justice.

It is said that the women, after eating it, shouted “tlanque cualantli”, which would be “the problem is over”. This tamale of enormous dimensions was prepared when they caught a rapist or an enemy warrior, but the Spaniards with their arrival forbade to cook with human meat, giving the order to do it with animal meat. In this way, the zacahuil continued to be prepared, becoming a gastronomic, historical and cultural reference.
