Has the corporate sponsorship of Pride enhanced or detracted from the LGBTQ+ movement?

Detracted, no question. Why? Well, take a look at all the special promotional logos those companies put up- then take a look at how they've changed their logos for their Middle East branches (hint: they haven't). It's shallow toadying for social status points. While I'm glad that gay people no longer risk getting beaten up or killed here (no more than anyone else, anyway) and have the same rights to marriage and anti-discrimination protections that I do (more, in some cases- that I'm actually not glad about, but that's another story), there are parts of the world where that's not true- parts where the festivities could legitimately be called "pride" instead of "lust", which is what they are here in the US.

Here, where it's safe, they give rainbows and grandiose speeches. Over where it's a death sentence to be born a certain way? Silence. Embarrassed throat-clearing at absolute BEST.

While I find it kinda performative, I do still think it's beneficial. Seeing large corporations visibly supporting the LGTBQ+ community in a pride parade or showcasing pride merch in their stores helped some of my gay friends feel like the tide was turning and society as a whole was becoming more accepting than it had been before. Imagine a gay child with conservative parents always feeling like they don't belong walking into a target store with their family and seeing a huge display right by the door embracing LGBTQ+ pride, and how much that might mean to them.

So yes, it's performative and the corporations could do way more to lobby for and otherwise improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people, but it's still better than nothing.

Ugh I hate it. If they cared they would do something all year, not just slap a sticker on something and get reputation and money off the real struggles lgbt members have gone through to get us where we are today

In terms of moral compass any cooperation is the definition of true neutral. What it shows is the majority market value and its not good in of itself but a strong standard being recognized as a normal thing.
