Why are lgbtq+ people "proud" of it?

I'm not trying to be homophobic or anything. If you're gay or whatever, ok it is your life. But I don't get the pride aspect. Homosexuality isn't an achievement. So what is there to be proud of?

I see it as being the opposite of ashamed.


Before the gay rights movement, many of them hid behind closed doors (figuratively) and didn’t reveal their sexual orientation.


Anyone who did reveal their non-heterosexual orientation were ridiculed and attacked verbally or physically.


Society tried to make them feel ashamed for something outside of their control.


Then… With the transition from shame to pride, it’s like a new and bold attitude.


It’s owning who they are.


It’s like going, “Yeah! I’m gay! So what? I’m gay and I’m PROUD to be gay.”


It’s a way to disarm the oppression around them.


Gay is no longer an insult or something to be ashamed of if one is proud to be gay.


It takes the stingers away from the bees.

I don't see it, either. BE gay, see if I care! Just be yourself! I'm a drummer! I've got 3 albums, so far but, I don't make sure everybody knows it every time I meet someone new! When I'm not on stage, I'm just me! I just happen to be someone that plays drums and has 3 albums, so far.
On the other hand, I also collect records and AM proud of having over 60,000 of them but, again, I don't make sure everyone knows it as soon as I meet them! I love to talk records and music but, I don't make it a point to make SURE that EVERY conversation I have is about records or at least includes them at some point in some way!
If we were to meet in a party or what have you, you might not know either of those things about me for a few hours, or even days/weeks, etc., unless the subject came up and you asked me if I am or I volunteered info to you that'd tell you I am.

Learning a skill like playing drums, having 3 albums so far and accruing 60,000 records is kind of something to be proud of though

Yeah, I guess so but, I just don't exactly think of it that way. I'm just a guy has those accomplishments. Otherwise, just come on over and play cards for a while, hang out, tell each other dirty jokes, go to the store, maybe I'll show you some card tricks, etc..
The point is, if you're gay, trans, a cross-dresser, so what? That's just you! You can still come over and play cards, or whatever! And, in the same token, I should be able to do likewise if I come see you without having your gayness or what have you shoved down my throat. Something like that would probably make me wanna get up and leave just as me talking non-stop records and drums would probably do the same with you.

It's not that we're cool or better, it's just that until recently, it wasn't socially acceptable to be gay.

Unless if it's a disability it's pretty cool to be in the 1%. Myself is proud of been goth compared to all the normies in this world but it wasn't really an achievement just who I am.
The same way you would be happy if you just so happened to born with good IQ you didn't exactly earn that but it's cool to have it. So I would assume this is why.

Assertions of being proud by a good number of groups is important because, historically, these groups were made to feel like shit for being different from the majority.

Being "proud" is a way to say "Fuck you! We are fine with who we are and there's nothing wrong with us no matter what you think!" to the oppressive assholes in the majority.

Maybe because they can be more open about it and not be scrutinized anymore, I wouldn’t call it proud but they are probably just trying to make it more acceptable to the rest of us that aren’t. It’s always the minority with the loudest voice that does this. It’s the squeaky wheel that gets oiled. I just hate it when it’s shoved down our throat and pushed on us with tv and commercials making it look like there is way more than there is
