What do you think about adding people you don't know on Facebook, Myspace, etc.?

This is not something I do at all, and I sort of don't like it, but I wanted to know what you guys think about adding someone or being added by someone you don't know online? I have about 7 request from people I don't know just sitting in my inbox on Facebook, and I just don't touch them because I don't know if I've met them or of they are just adding random people. Some people nowadays are just adding all their "mutual friends." I'm asking because last night I got the strong urge to add this one girl I met ONCE. She was really cute, but we never got a chance to talk, just meet. I don't like adding ANYONE I don't know and it does sort of feel weird when I get request from random people, both guy and girl, who I don't know.

So what do you guys think? Is it weird when people add you? Do you add random people? What would you do if someone randomly added you, would you ignore them like me? I just want your thoughts on the stranger adding, you don't have to answer any specific question :)

I know what you mean. I don't add people I don't know because people will harass you online if given the chance. Some guy from somewhere in the states added me once, it was very creepy. He was much older than me and there was no way I knew him, I looked at his profile and there were tonnes of women my age, so I kind of understood what he was looking for by doing this. I sent him a message asking him how he knew me and he responded by saying "I don't know you, but can we be friends, pretty please? ;)" So I clicked the deny button. I just find it inappropriate for someone to be using that site as a means of dating people. It's not even like we could have ever met in person anyway, so I just don't see the point.

People also like to collect friends on Facebook too, and what they don't know is that if their friends list is visible to friends on Facebook, those people can see who your friends are. Oftentimes those strangers go and add all of your friends off Facebook. I don't see the point really. So much can go wrong.

Plus having people on there I barely know opens me up to not having any privacy. People I don't know will know where I go, what I do and who I go with and what not. It just freaks me out personally. I am a very private person and I do need some of my own privacy.

Lol, thanks for the comment :P That is like exactly how I felt when I saw that creepy message! This guy was like almost 50, and I am in my early twenties. And we live in complete other countries, very far away. I don't know what his intentions were but I'm sure they weren't good. If you let people you don't know add you, then you are opening your information up to that person. People have had their Id stolen online :S That is just not cool :P

I only add people that I know and have met more than once. I might occasionally add someone I don't know but we have mutual friends so I ask my friends about that person before I add them. I add people that go to my school (it's not a huge school and I know most of them) but I just recently had to block a stalker kid from school :S he wouldn't leave me alone.

I don't add people I don't know. There's not really any point to it, because I only use Facebook for contact with my actual friends. I might add someone I had met only once, if I got along with her/him.

Well, everything for me depends on situation.

Just as in real life, strangers are like OK, unless you look like a thug, my doors are open. Need something? Come inside, have a cup of tea, become my friend, fine. If not, fine again! But if somehow I come to dislike you or feel unsafe, even if you're a friend already - limited profile or friend list removal.

On the other hand, If I find out that you're not adding me, maybe I should talk to you about this in real life or back off.

I seldom send requests on FB as I'm hardly ever on for a decent time but I do tend to accept random invites when I see there's a lot of mutual friends involved. I've met a lot of people that way. When I see them at parties then I know their name and all that.

i don't want to be a jerk, but at the same time it makes me uncomfortable.

Yeh! lol which is why I just leave the request sitting there for weeks on end. Leaves my conscience at ease... sort of lol.

I have 23 friend requests that sit in my Facebook inbox. I don't accept them because I have no idea what those people are.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with ex-classmates , actual classmates, relatives and so on .

there is no point in adding some guy or girl.

also if you add an unknown person you expose yourself to some risks.

this is exactly how I feel, and yes people are so ignorant about the security risks they open themselves up to even by allowing some apps, let alone actual people.

I see Facebook as a way of keeping in touch with people I know. I might add someone I don't know very well (like, if we met through mutual friends and hit it off and I'd like to talk to or hang out with them again), but never a random stranger.

Right? yet I always get these random people adding me. gets old because I don't know what to do if I meet them in real life (most of them are "mutual" friends). Just seems strange to me...

I don't add/accept people I don't know/remember

I don't add/accept people I've just met once

I dont' add/accept people I don't like/care about

I don't add people who have authority over me (my mother, my boss, etc.)

I call it "security"

i don't add strangers but when I get a request from someone who's going to the same school as me I accept their request .. even if we never had a REAL conversation

Yeh that happened to me the other day. I working at zumiez and this girl recognized me from high school and said she graduated a year before me. then I got a friend request from her later on Facebook... I just accepted it cause I didn't want to be a jerk. but I never talked to her at all in high school, so she wasn't actually my friend.

I only have actual friends, have a strict no work mates rule. I have a few pending friend requests from people I encounter often but don't like, I usually give them a month or so if I still don't like them then they are removed.

i will add people if I went to school with them, worked with them, if they are friends with someone I know or if I think they're cute. I don't talk to everyone on my friends list so its whatever

Dude, just add everyone, and if you see that there are bots that want to add you that have mutual friends delete the mutual friend and block the bot, that way you can get facebook famous and not have any problems.

It really depends on what kind of blazer you have...it can really go right or wrong. what I don't like are the jean blazers that are too short for some tall bodies :p

but other blazers I'm fine with
