Why do many people in cities suffer from Geographical Narcissism?

From what I can see, everybody has the same feelings about their particular surroundings and way of life. Someone from the city goes to see someone in the country, the city guy will think he's better and that the country guy is backward because he doesn't have what the city guy has. Country guy goes to visit the city guy and may think things there are snazzier than what he's got but, he'll eventually long to go back to where he came from on the grounds that his lifestyle was better.
It's all in how/where you were brought up and what you've become used to.
See if you can find someone that was brought up in the city AND the country and ask which one is better. They'll probably say they like both.
I might even fit into that! Born & raised in the city (well, just blocks away from the border of the main city, a suburb but, the actual city was only a 30:00 bus ride away and I went there A LOT) but, every weekend until I was in my late teens, we'd go out to my grandmother's house out in the sticks and sometimes spend a couple days there. We were in the valley and broadcasting connections were VERY poor, one dirt road was the only access to anything, a creek ran through the front yard and, at one point, actually ran OVER that dirt road, we had to go half a "block" from the house to take out the garbage and that was just a huge pile that was started back in the early 20th century, a train track ran along the other side of the creek and was not only very slow but they actually knew us!! We had spring water and free gas. The house was loaded with antiques and was never actually finished (mostly because grandma knew that, if the house was never finished, she never had to pay taxes on it!) And we mostly had to come up with our own entertainment: playing cards, having pillow fights with the porch furniture, or, we'd wait until dark and shut out all the lights and then one person with a flashlight would wave it up and down real fast onto a person on the other side of the room doing goofy things and it was like watching an old Charlie Chaplin movie. Having grandma's old wind-up record player and the records in it from about 100 years ago provided the perfect musical background for those "movies".
But, because I was allergic to the dust, the dampness and the huge yard of grass we had to cut every weekend, I couldn't wait to get home!! I caught a cold almost every time we spent the night!!

I never heard the term before. I just read up on it.

I grew up on the outskirts of Los Angeles when suburbs began popping up. Yes, I'm a boomer. At that time, there were many dairies in our area. They were gradually being replaced by housing tracts. There were wild places, fields and a river very nearby. We used to play in the fields and we could walk to the river to explore and catch polly wogs.
The river was eventually turned into a concrete channel.

Urban areas spread and orange groves were replaced by houses.

I loved visiting the city. There were wonderful museums, botanical gardens, restaurants, sights, activities and events. I liked being near the city. But I wouldn't want to live in one. There are too many people, and they are wrapped up in themselves. There's too much traffic congestion. I don't care for steel, glass, neon, noise, pollution, excess wealth or poverty. I don't care for consumer culture.

After I got married, I wanted to have a bit of land where I could grow some food, maybe have some chickens and be somewhat self-sustaining. My wife and I eventually moved to a rural part of Northern California. Our house is safe, peaceful and quiet, and the scenery is magnificent. We love being connected to nature. We get our water from our own pure well. There are goods, services, farms, wineries, and wonderful places to go and things to do very nearby. There are rivers, lakes and mountains. We are also a half hour drive from large towns with every big box store and service you can think of. We are within an hour of Sacramento and a 2.5 to 3 hour drive of San Francisco if we want big city attractions.

So all in all, cities have their good points and I like visiting them, but I love living in the country where I can be more connected to nature; to reality. I have an easier time meeting people and being actively involved in a smaller community. In cities, you are invisible; you are a nobody. And, as I implied, I don't give one fuck about conspicuous status.

Am I a geographical narcissist in my preference for rural or small town life? LOL

Based on the definition you provided, it is the fast paced evolution of society.
I have met women that didn't know certain kind of abuse from men was not normal behaviour. Like hitting them was another form of love. So, city people are assuming they are on the bleeding edge of society, from technology, art, and social practices. The interesting part is the idea that they are better than lesser "educated" people is kind of dumb.
Like seasonal fasion, it's kind of useless and makes people sheep. I wear colors that stimulate a certain emotion when around people, with a twist of style.

He more or less popularized the uninformed notion that college degrees somehow automatically made someone better and smarter. And since people with college degrees tend to live in big cities and suburban areas, that's why.

Can't say for certain but I would guess that its because they have not learned the value of hardwork like you do when your not in the big cities. That is they tend to live cushy lives in comparison (shorter travel, less effected by the elements (snow in a city gets cleared, snow in a rural area gets cleared only when your the one doing it generally speaking), they have less physically demanding jobs etc. I also think that they tend to be more likely to go to college which gives them a sense of superiority even though statistically students who go to college actually end up knowing less not more after their four years (statistically speaking). They tend to be less self reliant as well. and finally I think all of this combined with the fact that they don't interact with any one who isn't in the cities so they are caught in an echo chamber.

As I live in a small city surrounded by farmer villages I can say actual city folk are mostly told by her parents that you can only become succesfull in a city and farmers are losers but actually it is the farmer villages where the most usefull work is been done. Here in the Netherlands we are divided cause leftist are blaming farmers for the CO² levels and telling them to get rid of half of the animals in the country. While our farmers are actually worldwide known for being the least poluting ones. Yes we export a lot but if we would go in to total lockdown we would have 10 days until food runs out Just because they have to export so much.

City People think they are better because they are told that by their parents that drive an expensive car no Matter how rich I become I will make sure my future children are respecting farmers on farmers land there still also is close to no crime while in the city's murder is becoming normal

I am city centric, I think you know that. I think the smallest city I've ever lived in was Las Vegas. I try and understand that country folk also have smarts etc. but sometimes it's hard as I have a bunch of access that many simply do not. I think much of it is simply lack of access.

The only thing I care about, regarding cities is that people quit moving out of them and coming to where I live. They need to stay in the sewer pits they created, I don't want them and their bad ideas around me.

All I can surmise about your “Geographical narcissism” term is the thought that city dwellers who think their above all others. May be true for some but I’d say there’s some weird “American narcissism” about living on farms or rural shit bergs.

People in those kind of areas are confused lol it’s a complicated thing. Most people tht live in those types of places are temporary residents anyways who are looking to move to suburbs. The other people tht are there don’t live there and just work there so as I said it’s complicated but I understand what your saying and I agree with you lol people in those places can be super annoying.
